Nice metalwork Moe. I got lucky a few years ago when a neighbor was selling out, packing up and moving south. I was able to buy about eight of the large vise grip brand clamps for a few bucks each and a little giant ladder with two work platforms and leg extension for a hundred bucks. Gotta love garage sales!

Another nice thing to do with vice grips, is to weld a pick eye to the adjuster knob. Just cut off the threaded part first. Then you can adjust them after you squeeze down to apply less or more pressure. Learned this as a tin knocker. Also gives you a way to hang them up.

So to make sure it opens and closes properly, did you weld them in the closed position? That way you would know they meet up?
@sixtyfiveford3 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. I couldn't load the clamp though so everything was loose. So I kept the foots off and closed it to zero gap. So when I put the foots in there was an extra 1/2"(thickness of foots 1/4"x2) of closing force when all welded. This is so I know I have enough force to clamp down on thin sheet metal. Hope that makes sense.

It was good in theory but never seem to work quite right. It seems to be functioning far better in this large form. The biggest drawback is you don't have that finite control of tension because some stuff you want to grab way harder than others.
@bamcustoms73273 жыл бұрын
Great vid, I've done the same thing with cheap harbour freight units. If you take the reaching clamp styles, you can cut them in the middle of their span and weld in extensions. Mine reach 32" now. Not a great deal of actual clamping force, (and they do tend to twist) at that range but adequate for holding together sheet metal for tack welds. Well done!! New Subscriber...

Brilliant, i'm always impressed by your talent for fabrication :-D i bet there isn't much you can't make. I imagine some things like sockets would be hard to make as strong/neat as bought ones. But the old tube type nut remover sounds possible A selection of nuts with a taper on one side would allow a red hot tube to pressed on to the nut as a internal former. A bar through the width of the tube is the handle as is normal with that old design.
@sixtyfiveford3 жыл бұрын
I've had to make some large sockets over the years and they are always pretty crude but get the job done. Pressing a red hot tube over the nut is a good idea.

Great idea and execution. ..and nice touch going with the swivel pads rather than the nubs. I wouldn't be surprised if the factory pair came bent/twisted from the factory. I have a pair I bought as part of a 3 pair set, it closes all cross jawed every time. I also have another pair that blew a chunk off of one of the jaws when I clamped them together too tight. ..now I know what to do with them. Thanks for the idea. ..but I'll probably go with the nubbed tips cuz I'm cheap and lazy. ..btw, what did you use to pin the swivels? ..also, didn't you make a video where you turned a pair of pliers into one of those tools that uses wire for hose clamp situations?
@sixtyfiveford3 жыл бұрын
I just used a piece of 1/4 round rod for the pins and peened the ends. The pads took longer to make than everything else. If I did it again I would just take a piece of 1/2" round rod about 1" long and weld them laying flat to the tips. This would give good even pressure. I did make some wire clamping pliers and still use them on a regular basis.
@jdog45343 жыл бұрын
@@sixtyfiveford lol.. The old carpenter in me visualized ¼ round (¼ of a circle) rod and was thinking it would be better to use ¼"ø rod, then I reread and realized that was what you did. .. lol. ... You're talking about welding to the round part of the rod, right? ..not on the flat. I'll check out that other video again. ..I made one based on a different design, I think there's an eastern European woodsman/lumberjack/off grid youtube creator who made one that he uses to make some kind of internal combusting rocket log fire deal. ...Anyway, it works well but it's a bit complicated.
