Making Machetes from a Lawn Mower Blade

I took an old Lawnmower blade and made 2 machetes with it. Plasmacutting, forging, removing rust, making wooden handles and an attempt at sharpening the blade.

Heat until non magnetic, then quench in warm used motor oil (outside) if you want it to hold an edge. There's a little more to it, but that will make it workable. And using the corner of a stone is not how you sharpen, that's what heppend here, otherwise the bench grinder alone can give you a good chopping edge.

You ought to have used John Deere lawn mower blades. They are made out of something like 1/4 inch steel. We use them in our mowing operation and we get about 7 months out of a set before they have to be replaced, and they sharpen REALLY well.

Might be A572 and not crap A36 steel.

If you was to heat treat them and temper them at 400F you can get them razor sharp I took one and made a full size machete with a straight razor look an it is razor sharp cause I got it a little above 1450f non-magnet and quenched it in a 50/50 mix water an burnt motor oil and then tempered it at 400f for an hr let cool to room temp cool to the touch then done another cycle at 450 an hr then sharpen until it was razor sharp so it can be done so try again an use this method sorry from the USA I do Fahrenheit rather than Celsius temp but they looked nice hope all is well good luck

I sharpen my mower blade a few times a year. They can be sharpened, just not by using the corner of a sharpening block. :) I use a very fine metal file to do it.
