I think the flexing pipe probably helps keep it centred. Maybe a piece of wooden rod inside the poly pipe ? Think the setup is great going to make one based on your design

Thank you for sharing.. I can see i am not the only one who has a rolling barrel concept for malting. Mine is however much smaller than yours. Do you also smoke your barley over peat..?

This is a great idea! I'm going to try it with a 5 gallon bucket for smaller batches. Do you say you were using a wind shield wiper motor? Do you think the same ought to work for a 5 gallon bucket or do you have any suggestions as far as the motor goes? Thanks for sharing this video!

@HomeDistiller put two rollers one below and one to the side of the pcv pipe centered on the length to help support it.

Great video! Were you able to use the over modified grain or did you have to throw it out?

do you think that the difference with feed barley and malting barley is the plumpness of the grain? because it seems that the barley that i buy are not very plump even after steeping and they are still quite small, but they are malting very well.

Did you use ball bearings whee the pipe goes through the wood or just smear little wax or grease there and let it rub against the wood?

So, you grow, dry, and clean off the root and acrospire…all in this drum?
@HomeDistiller2 жыл бұрын
Only grow/malt.. The drying/cleaning process I use a modified clothes drier

@bradmacaboy not yet. rye is hard to get in AUS and also not recommended because of ergot mold, and wheat shoots on the outside of the hull so the turning needs to be very gentle

Hi Great video...thanks! If Im using a malt extract how much do I use and would u add sugar/dextrose to this mash to kickstart the yeast fermentation? Im using a "Mr Distiller" unit to distill fermented substrate to a single malt spirit. I simply need Proportions/Ratios! between H2O : malt extract : yeast (w/sugar/dextrose?) How much of each to start a viable mash ready for the Distillation process. Also what is your view using malt extract syrup vs malt Ext powders. Thanku verymuch Rob-o

Hey, I have made a grain roller out of a 75 litre Bucket for malting my own barley for beer brewing, I have made a couple of successful batches of malt, but lately I have not been able to get it to fully modify. I have tried different brands of barley, different batch sizes and tried sprouting some batches without the roller. The barley starts to germinate fine, but about four days into malting it seems to stop growing, then go moldy if I leave it. What do you think is wrong? Cheers.

maybe its too wet?? im not sure.. i dont add any water during the malting the only water is during the soak
@HomeDistiller14 жыл бұрын
@bowow0807 yeah feed barley is the low of the low seed barley is better, but it will still work you will just need a little more malt in your recipe

@roryb1989 what would that do? you mean to stop it bending? i think a broom handle up the guts would cost about the same and be much stronger (its what i ended up doing)

Hi HD , Im having a little trouble here : How many amps is your 12 volt converter rated at ? (I got a windshield wiper motor and a 10 amp 12 volt converter and with that converter the motor can barely start ) Should I have gotten a 15 or 20 amp converter ? Or do you think my motor is defective ? maybe the converter is defective,....if you are having no trouble and your converter is 5 amp then I know either my converter or motor is defective...
@HomeDistiller7 жыл бұрын
rbbiefah I'd say your motor is defective.. Although mine was only just big enough, will it start the motor with no load?
@rbbiefah7 жыл бұрын
The PI auto 10 amp inverter would just barely start the motor with no load and it too about 4-5 seconds before it started . But when I hooked the motor up to a 845 amp marine battery it jumped to life eagerly but I cant get the marine battery on a timer so i still need to buy an bigger inverter . How many amps is the inverter you use? ( here the link to my motor specs www.amequipment.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/801-1071-web.pdf from those specs it look like a I need a 40 amp inverter !) maybe I got a very heavy duty wiper motor that needs a lot of amps...

At 4:24 you can see it is rated 8A... ATX 2.x computer power supplies can often easily give 20A+ on the 12V rail.... (With ATX 2.x, most of the power is on 12V, so a large gaming 1200W power supply should be able to give almost 100A on 12V (some have it spread over multiple rails though...))
