Someone said it was the world's first slingshot. This is a hundred times better than a slingshot as it can be used in the Winter. Slingshots not so much.
@JJChWorkshop3 жыл бұрын
The main benefit the stonebow has compared to slinghsot is, that you can snipe with it. You can stay hidden without movement with the stonebow ready to shoot, waiting for that hare or partridge to show up. You can´t do this with a slingshot.

can you please make video teaching how to make wooden prod? how to bend it? how to control the draw weight? wait for it to dry before shaping it? take wood from only 1 side? what happens if you dont use a good wood like ash or yew? its a real art thank you for the videos
@JJChWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Hi late answer, but still. First you have to select good wood. Yew, ash, hickory, even hazel for lower draw weight. Depends where you live and what you have availible. Than you split the wood and let it dry properly. After that you remove wood only from the back of the prod (the side of the prod facing you). You don´t really want to remove wood rom the belly (the side facing away from you) and you should keep the belly as smooth as possible (reduces risks of breaking). Th final draw weight results from several factors - prod thickness and length, wood type and draw length. In case you use bad wood or fail to produce quality prod, you risk two things - either having weak prod, or having the prod break during shooting. Good luck

@@JJChWorkshop thank you! i am trying to make from acacia tree (acacia saligna) because they are invasive species where i live and people always cut alot of them down so i just have alot of it free and then i read that sometimes acacia can be used but im not sure but i guess thats really the only option i have
@JJChWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
@@rivenmain2175 Acacia should work, it is really hard but study. Your best bet is to make the prod quite wide but not too thick. Making it long (like around 100cm) would also reduce the risks of it breaking.

Noce work! Also With the advancement of plate armor I dont rhink this would be effective against a lot of troops? Maybe it was for hunting or shooting at other skirmishers?
@YaoiMastah4 жыл бұрын
This was for hunting and target practise. (in most of Western and Central Europe, church parishes have their own shooting club that dates back to pre-medieval times, before rifles were a thing, stone bows were used... google "Schutzenfest" for such traditions)
@JJChWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
It is a fun weapon, for practice target shooting. At best you could use it to hunt birds (using lead or clay balls). It doesn´t have enough power to pose actual threat to humans. Stonebows were never used in warfare in history.

How thick was the roller nut?
@briananuvattanachai66466 жыл бұрын
Why did you put that bend in the stock when the bow already has a curve on it?
@JJChWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
The front of the stock is lower than the middle part (the part where the rolling nut is). With the curve of the bow the bowstring is on the same level as the rolling nut, so when you shoot it the stone goes in straight line with the stock (the middle part with the nut) , passing over the front part of the stock. Without the curve in the stock the crossbow would actually shoot upwards making it more difficult to aim (couse the pocket for stones would be higher than the stock with the nut). Search historical examples, most stonebows have curve in the stock for this reason.
@briananuvattanachai66466 жыл бұрын
JJ Ch thank you. I had some more questions since I wanted to build something like this. How far from where the curve starts should the roller nut be to avoid splitting? Also with the bow how far away should it from curve? A couple other questions if you don't mind how wide is the pocket and how long are the spacers?
@JJChWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Well, the curve starts about 2cm from the nut, the bow itself is just on the front end of the curve. I don´t think splitting could be a problem, unless you use very very sttrong bow (like 150lbs+). Just go for hardwood stock and you should be OK. The leather pocket is a square 4*4cm and the spacers total lenght is 5cm, while they keep the strings 4cm apart (= the open pocket size). Hope that helps, good luck with the build
@briananuvattanachai66466 жыл бұрын
JJ Ch would you add a stirrup to it? Cause I want to make it a high draw weight 150 lb.I was going to use those cheap fiberglass prod they sell online on Amazon. I know that the bow isn't curved but is straight couldn't I just make the notch where it's supposed to go more angled so that the double string has enough clearance to perform properly?
@JJChWorkshop6 жыл бұрын
Yes, making the notch angled could work as well i think. Adding a stirrup shouldn´t be a problem, check out the channel I actually made conventional bolt crossbow with metal stirrup some time ago.

stonebows historically weren't used with actual stones. they used clay or lead balls
@JJChWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
True, but i am sure using stones you find on the ground for practice/fun shooting was common as well. No need to waste expansive lead balls
@matthewmcbroom85715 жыл бұрын
@@JJChWorkshop It is true that lead was expensive then but clay was much cheaper and abundant. No doubt stones were used at times for practice but likely not for actual hunting. The problem with using random stones is they are inconsistent and oddly shaped. This would likely affect accuracy and when hunting small game such as birds, squirrels and rabbits, the slightest flight deviation could mean the difference between getting a meal or going hungry.
