You might want to do some research about Priming different materials with a primer before painting. It'll save you time and aggravation. Suggestion.

How did you bake the grass in the oven since the transparent sticks seems to be plastic and would melt...

Oh! I'll explain it to you. The clay made of grass is naturally dry clay, so it hardens over time. I don't need an oven. It doesn't melt even if you attach acrylic rods to the glue gun.
