That was some old soul shit man. 100%. I’ve been doing photography all my life. I’ve had ups and downs (money) never once gave a damn as long as I had film to burn. Respect for always telling the truth.

In the years since accepting the label and being comfortable with being a photographer, I've learned a lot. I learned, even more, when I started speaking but still felt something was missing. People have to realize there is no magic bullet or formula for making money in photography. If you do, count yourself luck especially with the easy access to gear and the low bar of what's acceptable as photography. A lot of people only pick up their camera if there is money involved which is why so many fail; especially if they're only a 1 trick pony. I remember going to speak at WPPI a few years ago and a colleague asked me why I was doing what I was doing. I told him it wasn't to make money because I'm always broke but despite that reality, I still kept picking up my camera. Mind you, I have unique challenges in that I shoot from a wheelchair and I can't do everything I would want without some plan or creative perspectives but I fucking do it. I'm glad I came across your channel and glad to see you making an impact. I hope I get the opportunity to talk with you one day but in the meantime keep up the work!

I've spent $5000 on a trip to Israel and the West Bank to realize my dream of shooting a documentary and writing about the conflict. If I wanted to make money I should have stayed at home and shoot weddings and shit. Suddenly when I came back someone noticed my dedication and actually offered me money for some of my images.

I would love to get an assignment for Israel now but my next destination will be Lesbos in the next 2-3 weeks, then Ukraine and Africa. I will still try to go to Israel and especially Gaza asap

Absolutely. Coming as someone who originally got into photography for “quick cash,” the idea that any creative industry is a get rich quick scheme’s a fallacy

100% doesnt matter what you sell or do like photography. The brand you sell is yourself. My uncle who is a car salesman doesnt need to hit the sales floor but that took years. Didnt happen overnight. Some of his lifelong customers were ones who he never thought would buy or looked like they could afford the car. Come to this... well as i start out... i want to be the best photographer around and draw people to asking and wanting me to do it. I want to have my photos in posters and such. But as i learn is that overnight.... nope. Time and practice. And ill be selling my reputation.

Yo Grumpy Gus...Glad to see you did a stellar job putting together an ad for your sponsor. Most KZbinrs just sit there and say some stupid shit because they don't take sponsorship's seriously. Now for your topic...I shot professionally for around 15 years because I love photography so much I wanted to do it full time. But I found that it killed my creativity so I quit making money that way and left the field. I'm much happier now shooting just for myself and not having to deal with clients.

8:15 This is incredibly valuable info, especially for those who enjoy multiple genres of photography but want large corporate gigs or whatever. I've worked with a number of veteran photographers, and they were very upfront about working for big clients or building up a large group of regular clients. 99% of the time, clients want something that you're consistently good at... it may not be the kind work that excites you at all (but it pays the rent maybe), and you probably won't have much creative control. If that sounds boring, it is, and you might have to do that for years before you get to do what you want.

To be completely honest I love photography but I did in fact buy my camera with intentions to make this a career. It's been a couple months since then and now I've reached a point where I really don't give a shit if this is my career at some point ima shoot regardless there's nothing better than getting home and throwing your flicks up on the computer and seeing an absolute banger that you shot. That alone is more satisfying than any gig or paycheck. So end of the day whether I become rich and famous or not we still outside and we still doin shit 🙏🙏

Thank you for saying that people try to become photographers just to be predators. It’s a huge issue within the community. True talk. Ive started photography for myself and as hobby since I injured my shoulder and broke ankle so cannot workout until they heal one day. Best decision ever, I love it so far and takes most of my time to learn skills or master my fuji camera. When I see pro photographer or check them on insta - half are average and not always that good. Makes me feel better to know we people with passion and doing this coz we love we can be much better, we put more work in out skills and just to learn stuff.

I completely agree on not going into photography solely for money. The industry is difficult as it is and you have to have a creative eye before you even get into this.
@andresdiaz25784 жыл бұрын
i feel ya. Money and Instagram isn't everything in life or your career. I think you should be focusing in improving your craft and not worry about how much followers you have. However It's hard to put that mindset in practice due to the fact that money is unfortunately a thing in life and at times can govern where you go in life. The best way in my opinion to pursue your career or passion is to not focus on one aspect of your career such as just focusing on the money side of things or just focusing on just your craft and not caring about your recognition. I personally think both of those aspects are equally important to a certain extent. You just have to find a way that goes with you and I know it's easier said than done but it's possible and can be done it's just a matter of commitment in your craft. There is no one answer to everyone woes you have to find that solution yourself and once you do it all pays off. And if not keep trying and don't be afraid to ask for help and guidance to the people you know and trust. The worst thing you can do is never try at all!! prayers to y'all 🙏

Yes yes yes. So many people get into photography for the wrong reasons, clout and money being two of them. There are so many photographers in my city that don't even seem to take the art seriously. I used to do a lot of band/concert photography before covid, and I remember seeing all these band photographers just going around getting these cliche, concert shots. They would then slap a very loud, light leak filter they found on Google images onto the photo, and then post. I don't want to be a gate keeper, but I know a lot of those people were only doing that because light leaks were "trendy" and would receive a lot of likes.

We in Germany have something called "Ausbildung". With it you learn photography from a photographer for the pure purpose of earning money. Someone who has a "Ausbildung" is only entitled to work as a photographer in Germany and to register with the tax office. So no more luck to earn money here for hobby photographers.
