A helpful bit of music theory that I kinda use a lot as a wannabe musician is like. Certain notes feel like they "want" to move into another note. This depends on the scale and it's super complex, but you can feel your way through this. If a note "feels" like it finishes the melody or just kind of like, rings out sorta, you can tease the listener by building up to that, and not playing a resolving note until a bit later. Going too long without resolving kinda feels like, crummy, but you can toy around with it a bit. It's kind of like getting a drink of water after you keep dropping the glass and have to go to the store and buy a new glass each time. Way better than if you had just drank it at the first possible chance! ...lot more glass in your feet, though.

As a college student studying music theory, this is actually really informative!! I don’t know about beepbox, but the main limitations in chrome music lab are the lack of instrument variety and that it traps you on your scale. If you want to make something that sounds a little less classical, experimenting outside of the scale is sometimes helpful, because it sounds much more dissonant than even the most dissonant intervals you can get inside of a major or minor scale. But chrome music lab, in my opinion, is the best way to get into music production because of how simple it is for people to pick up and then quickly learn how to make things sound good!
@DataPotato7 ай бұрын
Well I made this video a month.5 ago so I probably won't respond to any comments that aren't questions. Wait, what is this then??? Ok, ok, while I'm here, I just wanna say thanks for saying my video was informative and for giving all those suggesitons! Yeah I agree that experimenting outside of the scale is helpful! And while dissonant stuff can be tricky to get right, it can sound really good! Good luck with your musical carrreeeerrrr and best of luck with your musical carrrreeeerrrr! Wait that's very redundant WAI-- and thabks for commenting ;0
@thatguynamedgeorge92187 ай бұрын
What do you mean Chrome Music Lab traps you on a scale? I'm pretty sure there is an option in the settings that allows you to include all notes (with their sharps and flats) between octaves, as well as an option to change the key it's in. You can also use the Inspect tool to hack it to give you more octaves pretty easily.
@eek43827 ай бұрын
@@thatguynamedgeorge9218 I could be wrong, I never used it very much but as far as I was aware, you could only select Major/Minor scales and then use notes inside of them
@thatguynamedgeorge92187 ай бұрын
@@eek4382 Well, there is a third option for Chromatic scale, in case you want the full range of notes. Chrome Music Lab's song maker is only really limited in: 1. The amount of measures you can use/length of the song _(can be expanded through Inspect tool, but is risky since you can't save it as a link and could lose all your progress if the tab is closed out)_ 2. The samples _(both notes and percussion)_ 3. Amount of tracks _(can only have one)_ -4. The range- _(Not actually a limitation, can be easily expanded through the Inspect tool under half a minute.)_ For a good example of how far Song Maker can be pushed, check out the video where someone recreated every Undertale track relatively well with it. Adding on to the beepbox thing, you can add more channels. This goes for notes or melodies. You can also go into the preferences and turn on a bunch of different settings that give you things like octave scrolling, piano keys that let you see what note you're playing in like you have in the video, and channel muting. There's also different mods of beepbox like Ultrabox, Pandorasbox, and Jummbox that have more features like the ability to add a mod channel as well as a wider variety of instrumentals.

As someone who's been writing music for nine years, I'm so glad you added that tip about analysing the music of others to see what you can learn from it. Aside from practicing writing music yourself, analysing others' music is the single best thing you can do to improve. Music theory, in essence, is just the organisation and formalisation of that process through the use of labels for the many different concepts you encounter for better communication and comprehension. Just be careful, because "music theory" is also often weaponised as a White supremacist dogwhistle to uphold centuries-old European music as the pinnacle of musical innovation that all other genres are inferior to, which is utter bullshit. It's good music, don't get me wrong, but so is all that other stuff. The idea is that the compositional practices of this old European music, as labelled and structured in music education systems, have an exclusive claim to the term "music theory" and all other genres are judged on their conformity to these conventions, which is bullshit. True music theory is as diverse as the cultures and genres it describes, and each has its own form of music theory that focuses on its strengths, priorities and traditions. And no one person can know it all. There's no point where someone "knows music theory" because there's always more out there. The best way to cultivate the theory knowledge that best supports your music making is to focus on analysing the music you like to listen to, as that's what leads you to make music you like to listen to. Don't entirely ignore all the other music, though. There's valuable shit to pick up on when you look outside the box.

Helpful for a professional classical musician too, helps me realize what kind of music people like so I can compose in a style non-musicians can appreciate

I had never heard of Chrome Music Lab or Beepbox before. Been needing something simpler than LMMS or Reaper to cut my teeth on to fully grasp music composition, so this was very helpful.

As a (Probably) professional Beepbox user, I approve of this video Also here are some stuff you can do to improve your songs: Insert channel - Allows you to put more instruments in your songs Insert bar - Allows you to make your song longer Scale: Expert - Unlocks all notes

Awesome! Y’a know, I don’t know how much of what I said was legit useful music teaching, I just wanted to inspire people to make SOMETHING, because the best way to learn is to mess around. :) I’m glad I could be of service. Yes I copy and pasted this comment to someone else, 😎

I've always used chrome music lab paired with audacity to make music. Knowing beepbox is an option now I think I might try making a song with it soon.

Yeah! And if you're looking for more tools in beepbox there are mods like ultrabox! Also lmms is a cool tool too, it resembles garage band a bit more than beepbox. Anyway, I'm glad I could help a bit, I wish you the best of luck in your music-making career!!!

There's some things you forgot to mention about BeepBox: 1) There's mods of it (my personal fave is midbox) 2) There's more customization stuff, like adding or removing beats and tracks and other stuff 3) Sliding notes and dynamics And more!
