It's really cool that you decided to make such a comprehensive series of videos about the making of a new short film! I watched the video and also read the script. I have the idea that you could make the story more complex but little longer: add some action in the beginning or middle of the film that would give a hint that Oliver is actually a ghost. Still, at first glance it would seem as if you were trying to open up his inner world and character where he is just gone crazy with loneliness. For example, he writes a letter to his wife, where he writes as a subtext how he died, and later a pile of old empty unsent letters can be seen somewhere. Then the twist at the end would be more compelling, because if you start thinking about it later or rewatch it, you'll find these clues.

Thanks so much for posting this, the reality of actually making a film. I still have the pre-production notes of a film I will someday make from back in 1984, yes it is still on the bookshelf. You have inspired me to actually look at it again, and transfer all that to digital, I will be checking out Milanote harder this time around. My takeaway is like you said, get it all out of your head, even though you have put a bunch of hours into this already, that will never be lost. All those times where we waste our time, airports, airplanes, hotel rooms, watching Sunday football, are great times to just toss a hour here and there at a project. Having big chunks of prep work already done, can save tons of time and money when the opportunity does come up. Or when you are on set and talking to a crew member and they mention a location, actor, artist, and your brain makes that connection, you have somewhere to actually drop that info into. I’d ask all your subscribers to chip in $20, now that I know what the story is about, I’d really like to see it get created. Also wish CA, and UT were closer, would love to be on the crew somewhere.

There's key personnel that I need involved, but the winds of fate aren't pulling them in towards me as I had hoped. I hope things eventually fall in line for your project to get going, Kent.

I didn't expect the grim ending for the curious couple would come from a ghost. I thought Brody was the one going to have trouble because I've had 3 golden retrievers, had a bush lot with a cabin that I went to with them even when it meant showshoes over 4 feet of snow. Goldens will eat all your food, take the best spot to sleep, and greet any unexpected trespassers with delight.

That is a very ambitious short and I don't mean it as a compliment, but as a warning. It's going to be very hard to pull it off. Kudos to you, if you are able to make visual sense out of it because I wouldn't know where to start. You are heavily dependent on amazing vfx and props. I know people are praising the story but it's a cliche type of plot twist at the end.. Again, if you are able to pull it off, I'll be here clapping.

Certainly like the idea, if executed well - it’s gonna be great! Slightly worrying thing: VFX, both an otter and ghost creature. I’m sure you know it better than me, but I’d try to show as little as possible of VFX, unless you are really 100% certain your CGI will be on point. Cause that one thing is such a sure way to ruin otherwise a really good movie :) Also, I hope there’s gonna be a lot of good ambient sounds, the audio should also be on point for us all to be immersed into that 1900 remote nature Gold Rush kind of era. Overall, can’t wait for more BTS videos about this project, it sounds really cool. Thank you for the videos, very interesting and informative!

Apologies but I do need to point out an anachronism. Golden retrievers were first bred on a private estate in Scotland in the late 19th century. The first 'public' examples weren't recorded by the Kennel Club until 1903. It's incredibly unlikely that a prospector in Alaska in 1899 would have a golden retriever.

Audio can make 50% or even more of your film, don’t forget or underestimate its importance. Also, if possible, focus on the emotional journey. If the story is good, maybe thought provoking, maybe tear jerking in general, the audience will forgive a lot. But the main: just go do it. You gonna make a lot of mistakes but you will also learn a lot.

How has no one created an ai storyboard generator yet? For each shot, you would enter a prompt of what the shot should look like, and it would generate images.
