Oh cool! Being able to feel the original fabric makes such a difference. Whenever I teach someone to sew I have them go through the fabric store closing their eyes and feeling the fabric before checking the content.

Your swimsuit turned out amazing! I used to sew swimsuits for my water aerobics class. I found some great materials for them and recommend a lining called "power stretch" and the clear elastic for leg openings. I think switching out muslin for a different fabric was a good choice. I found that a lot of threads won't hold up to chlorine, I ended up using a wooly nylon for the later ones. When I was learning how to make them I went to a swimsuit manufacturing outlet. They told me there that the swimsuit when you buy it should be the same size as you without ease, because the fabric stretches over time. It sounded crazy, but the swimsuits I made after that held up better. You are such an inspiration, I love the finishing touch with your signature.

I used to do a LOT of sewing and once made a two-piece swimsuit in the late 60’s. It was made of white eyelet cotton and dbl lined (obviously). (That was back when I didn’t have to do any altering to the pattern & I was several sizes smaller! 😄) I wore it ONCE to the lake and some guy made a comment about my wearing my “skivvies” to swim in. That was the last time I ever wore it. Dont know what I was thinking, since when I thot abt it, it really did resemble underwear. 😬

The first/only time I wore a two-piece swim suit, I dove into the pool, thinking I looked so cute, and the top came off in the water. (mid 1960s)

If you don't want to buy 4 cones of thread for serging a project, a quick way around it is to wind bobbins for the needle thread(s) and then set up the machine for a single looper thread that gets fed from just one cone or spool. Or, if your serger can't do a single-looper stitch you can either use 2 cones/spools or play thread-chicken with using a bobbin for one of the loopers (the loopers use way more thread than the needles). That said, regular polyester thread should be fine for a swimsuit when using a serger. It'll hold up to chlorine, and the way the serger stitch is formed will provide it with enough stretch to do the job just fine. If you don't mind how the inside looks, you can use a matching thread for the outermost needle and then just whatever thread for the rest since they'll never show on the right side. I love how this project turned out though, it looks great!

That is super cute! You could tighten the leg openings with some clear elastic, maybe just on the sides?

Thanks for another great video, SewRena! Inspiring! You look like a fifties fashion model in your new bathing suit 🩱. I have a “Cute & Covered” pattern for a swim dress with attached shorts. Although I don’t agree with the company owner’s extreme take on religion, it’s a great pattern. You’ve inspired me to eventually sew the swimsuit. Seeing your frustration, I will skip that stretch thread. Yikes! I’ll stick with poly thread.

Oh my…I thought that Coats and Clark Eloflex would be great to use with knits. I was so wrong. No matter how I adjusted my machines(I gave up after the 4th one) …. horrible. I have at least a dozen spools of Eloflex and absolutely hate it! If I could find someone that wanted it I would give every spool of it to them. I do recommend the stretch needles though and I use regular thread. I have a lot of things I have made from knit fabric. For my vertical seams I do not use or need a ‘stretch’ stitch, I simply use a regular stitch. For my horizontal seams I use a narrow zig zag stitch. I do not like the ‘stretch’ stitch on my machine. I can use a twin needle with a longer stitch for the hems (sleeves and hems). I do have a serger if I want to use that. And for hemming I do have a Coverstitch which comes in very handy. Eloflex is a stretch thread that your machine may or may not like. Write down any adjustments you make or make a sample of the stitches and settings to find the best fit and keep those notes. Love your channel and appreciate the work you put in to your fabulous clothes. So very beautiful. Truly, such beautiful work and fabulous style.

Back in the 80s I found a lot of 50s bathing suits in the thrift stores and I would buy them and try them all on. Some handmade and some were store-bought and they all looked bunchy when put on. every single one! Was it on purpose? because when things get wet things start showing? Then I realized… I don’t think people thought things could or should be super tight fitting across the body because stretchy fabrics hadn’t come out yet, so nobody thought that it was possible to get something to look so tight and stretched across your body and those old bathing suits being made of cotton with a lining Couldn’t possibly do that❤ so maybe fix it a little bit but leave it a little little bit bunchy too!🌸
@jayneterry87015 ай бұрын
I agree I don't think it was super tight then. You need ease when the fabric doesn't stretch. Not exactly sure why your stretchy thread kept breaking but I sort of remember not being able to sew fast with it. Friction would build up to snap it.

This is an adorable swimsuit. It's feminine and figure flattering for a lot of body types without any 'assets' top or bottom hanging out. Have you tried swimming in it? I mean, probably not good for anybody into swimming laps, but for the typical dunk in the ocean or pool, I'm wondering how it feels. I have a question about your sewing machines. I appreciate your use of vintage in many areas of your life and your use of patterns available to homesewers of the time, but home machines were home machines and not industrial machines, so our stuff always looked homesewn, vs. 'store-made', unless somebody were a professional tailor or seamstress and had the tools that went along with that. Long way round to ask why not use modern machines which would be of comparable quality to professional sewing machines of the time? (my grandfather and great-grandfather were tailors from a village of people who were involved in the trade in some way or another as seamstresses, or shoemakers, etc. which is why I ask.)

I went to a concert one time in Greeley Colorado. It was with "Hazel Miller and her Zydeco band." There was a woman up front that was not dressed very modestly and she was gyrating and moving in a way that left not very much to the imagination. Hazel called out to her, "Honey, you don't have to show EVERYTHING your mama gave you!"😮
