There's so much love and thoughtfulness in these videos, and I love the C.S. Lewis quotes we've been getting lately. Almost brings a tear to an eye how much deference is given to the humility of gardening. Like you said, a garden like that is a temporary thing, but appreciating those moments are what matters. Life is temporary too. Even if once in a while you've got to till it up because things didn't take. Take care, my internet father.

Next time you're on the east coast - Just passed by this place today and wanted to share it with the west coast Wadsworths. They have a roadfront stone wall that is currently being rebuild and a banner hangs from it saying "save this wall". It's hundreds of yards long & so cool: The Wadsworth Homestead is the only country manor estate in New York State that has been continually owned by the original family since 1804. Treasures that have been passed down over seven generations evoke the incredible story of over 200 years in this enchanting home overlooking the scenic Genesee River Valley. Gardening for me has become a great source of joy. It has also introduced me to a much older and much wiser community I otherwise would have never been a part of. When it feels like there is nothing left to go around I go in my back yard and feel a sense of abundance and I can say 'I did that.'

4 years ago i decided to try to make it faster and easier to water my tomato plants ... I cut 5 gallon buckets in 1/2 and then cut the bottom out to make a 7 inch tall cylinder . I dug a hole deep enough to bury it 6 inches into the ground ... then put the plant in and fill it up 6 inches of dirt leaving one inch of bucket showing so that when I water , the water was staying inside and flowing down to the roots .

Thank you for the wonderful gardening video, Mr. Wadsworth. It really shows that, sometimes, the joy we get from the garden is the more to do with the remembrance of those who were dear to us, than just added foodstuffs. My grandfather was the master gardener of the family, in addition to being a Sawyer in NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania for 50+ years. (He was also a small engine wizard, woodworker, tinkerer, and maker of hotcakes.) A great many channels (like you, Out of the Woods, and Hand Tool Rescue) are on my feed because of his influence. By the way, if you have purslane coming up in between your plants, let it grow. It's a delicious edible plant, as well as helping to shade the root systems nearby. P.S. Pepper plants can be overwintered in a basement, garage, or greenhouse (my 3 experimental bell peppers are now 2 years old), and Tomatoes can be overwintered after a fashion as well. Lamb's Quarter and Pigweed make good cooked greens too.

There really is nothing like planting and tending a garden. As far back as I can remember I have great memories of being in the gardens of both sets of my grandparents and our own garden with my Mom, Dad and sisters. I was blessed with meeting a girl who became my wife and her family to did gardens. Unfortunately her Father had passed before I met her, but her Mother and I bonded over working her garden. Unfortunately we lost her a few years back but now my wife and I plant a garden together every year on what was her families land and it is great time spent together, both in the garden and in the kitchen making recipes and preserving our harvest every year. Every time I step foot in that garden it somehow feels as if all those family members are somehow there with us.

Gardening always makes me think of my parents that are no longer with me. We put out a good sized garden when I was younger. It’s my thinking place, my place of joy, taking seeds and producing something you and others like. Some of my plants are like people I think, no matter how rough they are or slow to grow, give them and chance and you may be surprised at the end with both. And if the garden doesn’t work out, hopefully there is always next year. And the best part now is my granddaughter loves to come to my magical garden as she calls it, and will eat about anything in it, which is a surprise because she eats things that normally she wouldn’t.

I used to plant an 80 by 90 foot garden back in the day on the farm. It was done where pigs had run years earlier. The hedgerows that had grown up along the pig fence kept the deer out. It was quite a bit of work doing almost 7,200 square feet with a walk-behind tiller, but the amount of produce was fantastic. I'm 72 now, and my "garden" consists of 20 plant bags of tomatoes and hot peppers and herbs started from seed on the back deck of the condo. I still process tomato sauce and make hot sauce. Working the soil (even in bags) is therapeutic.

At 8 years of age I ask my parents if I could have a little garden plot of my own to raise vegetables that I could sale to help me to raise my own spending money. Two years later I also starting mowing yards and doing other yard work. My little plot soon got abandoned as the older siblings started leaving home snd we no longer needed the entire for the family so I got part of the main garden. Some fond memories from those days and s lot of lessons learned many of which still stick with me almost 60 years later.

I grew up in Upstate New York, and we called them suckers. Several years going when I was in High School, my dad and I grew and sold tomato sets. My best-ever sale was selling sets to a friend's dad, only to have my dad laugh at me when I described the sale. Turns out he was in the Cornell University Agronomy School, his specialty - Tomatos.

Why do you put construction paper and then Mulch down? I'm in Phoenix and I built a small 6x8 raised planter bed out of Redwood 2x6's (2 high) and a 2x6 Redwood ledge around the top. I then lined it and the bottom with 2 layers of 6mil plastic to keep the desert crap from growing up and keep the water and moisture in the mulch. I then filled with mulch and garden soil mixed.... Going on year 3. Wife and I grow seed's into small plants in our indoor Hydroponic garden and then transplant to the planter when they are grown and ready. Love the fresh Jalapenos, Green/Red Bell Peppers, Tomatos, Brocholli, Brussel Sprouts, and whatever else we like to try and grow.

@rodisamet9174 Жыл бұрын
PVC irrigation is not a good idea. PVC is not used for water pipes because it leaches chemicals into the soil, especially when heated by the sun. Most irrigation systems today use polypropylene for that reason.
