My first attempt at making my own carbide woodturning tool. It was one of those days when everything seemed to fight back, but I got there in the end. Some lessons learn't and I'm happy with the result. A Square peg in a round hole does go.

Hi Jake, thanks for that. I intend to make a few next week. BTW, don't know if your done making these yet, BUT buying mild steel off the net is one huge rip off. I do a bit of blacksmithing and buy my steel from FH Brundle (who have stores in regional centres across the uk) So for 3metres of 10mm sq bar costs £2.70+ vat, 6metres of 10mm sq bar costs £4.70+vat. Check out their online store. Also its great to see you include the mistakes, we all make them and helps other people learn seeing what can go wrong. Cheers

thanks for the heads up. Sadly the £10 delivery fee seems a bit steep for a £3 order.

+Robert Evans Thanks Robert. Yes the workshop really is good for light, I am glad I choose a clear roof. Just go for it and within a couple of hours you will have a great tool which will really add to your turning options.

You probably figured this out but for others trying this, when you make your next ferrell try to just narrow down the very tip--- just the width of your parting tool --- til you get it right and THEN reduce the entire ferrell width. You waste less wood that way if you go too far. Also if you make the hole just a bit bigger it will fit better and the epoxy will fill the gaps and hold plenty well---and no cracks :) I used a hacksaw to make the ledge on the tool and then fine tuned it with a file. I worry about using the side of a stone. Some say that is dangerous---don't know if that is true but the other way worked well! Hope this helps on your next ones!

You can use the carbide teeth from saw blades to make cutting tools. Works great.

Jake, I watched your video and would like to know if the blade supporting the circular steel tool is common carbon steel or does it have to be hard steel? Congratulations on your videos, they are very explanatory. att Judson Kuntz brazil br

Nice job! I've been meaning to make me some of these, thought about a round and a square for now, diamond I'll leave for later... maybe.. it seems making these is simpler then I thought, so I'll just sink my teeth in and go for it. Can you please link to the place you bought the bar from? I'd like to know the specs on it. Thanks for sharing!!
@JWWoodturning
@JWWoodturning 9 жыл бұрын
Yuval Lahav The bar came of ebay, there are lots of suppliers about. You can usually pick it up at places like Wickes etc in the UK. If you buy on ebay try to avoid Chinese suppliers as although there cheap delivery can take a while.

Jake Webb I wanted the link just so I could see which type metal it was, and what should I look for locally, or globally, should I won't find it around here :)

how long do the carbide tips last?
@JWWoodturning
@JWWoodturning 8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Head I Plan to do a follow up video on how well these tips wear and how well they can be resharpened at a later date. So far I can discern no reduction in the sharpness of the tips and have yet to even turn a tip round to expose a new cutting edge. They carbide tools get regular useage in my turnings. My feeling at this stage is that longevity is not going to be an issue with this type of tool steel.

Lots of wobble. Not true. Crooked. Why not take the time to do things right? ... especially if you are making a video. Why show people such terrible workmanship????
@JWWoodturning
@JWWoodturning 6 жыл бұрын
I share my mistakes so others can learn from them. You are mistaking youtube creators for TV channels. If you want to see perfection then you want to be mis-lead by retakes, structured scripts and high manipulated reality. You will never find those things on my channel. As for my terrible workmanship these tools are used almost every time I turn. I would advise you never attempt to make your own tools I suspect their lack of perfection will upset you. Just buy what you need and enjoy their heartless perfection.
