Making my Own Paper Airplane Game Because I Cannot Use Google To Search For One

This is the first Devlog of my game about paper airplanes. I am developing it in the Unreal Engine 5. I hope you'll like it :)

THAT was a suuuper cool video hahaha! Very entertaining! About the game: In my opinion, looking at the spaceship movement of No Man's Sky would help since the movement with the mouse is pretty much perfect and would fit a paper airplane very well :D Also, it's maybe not the best to rotate the camera exactly the same amount that the airplane rotates since players might feel dizzy hahaha, so try out rotating it only by a few degrees and see if it fits! Keep us updated :D

Thanks a lot for all the inputs! For now I only have keyboard controls for the paper airplane, but I was thinking about adding mouse-based controls. Since you say that No Man's Sky has good spaceship movement controls, I will definitely check that out (Also, No Man's Sky is on my "games-that-I-have-to-try" list ahahah) Thanks for the feedback on the camera. I think I tested the game too much and got used to the rotation ahahah. I'll keep it in mind and adjust it if it makes players dizzy (or have some settings for that)

Love the concept of a paper airplane game you're making, two cool paper airplane games (one that's out and one that's in development) you could check out for inspiration are "lifeslide" and "Paper Sky".

I'd make the plane slow down over time so that you can implement a bosst that gains "stamina" when going close to objects. Plus I would make the sense of speed a little more / make the rotating accelerate / decelerate so it feels less rigid. Looks fun tho :D

Thanks! Yeah, I definitely need to improve the sense of speed part. I'll adjust the camera shake effect (it is a bit too subtle now) and the rotation acceleration/deceleration. I implemented the rotation accceleration towards the end, but I still have to play a bit with the acceleration values as it might be accelerating too fast that the transition between "not rotating" and "rotating at full speed" is barely noticeable I think I'll also need to add some more effects to convey the speed a bit more. Maybe blurring the edges would help, but I am not sure ahahah As for the stamina, I didn't think about it, but I think it might be a good idea to implement some sort of stamina mechanism in the game

Game development is a difficult process, yet you make it seem so simple in this video! 😄 A bit of a technical question, are you using different LOD's for trees in your scene?

Thanks :D About the LODs, I am using Nanite for the trees. Nanite is a feature in Unreal Engine 5 that basically creates dynamic LODs, and it is optimized quite well. The asset pack also contains LODs for the trees, but I noticed that the game runs a bit faster when trees have Nanite support vs when I use them with LODs I think that since the trees are moving slightly (to imitate the effect of the wind), the performance of the game is not optimal. I will test the game with static trees with less triangles in the future

You are right ahahah The reality is that I just wanted to make a paper airplane game, but that sounds boring. I changed the title to mention that I cannot use google to find one. I think this sounds even better that the original title, but I am bad with naming things, so I don't really know...

You made me realize that I haven't actually talked about what the game will be about, other than having paper airplanes in it ahahah It will be a combat game with paper airplanes, so basically paper airplanes shooting missles at each other, or something like that. I will talk more about it in the next video (I hope to remember to do it this time)

This was a reference to one of my past videos in which I tried Godot. At the time, Unity wanted to implement a policy that would force developers to pay 20 cents for every download of a game they made. For developers that made free game(and not only for them) this was a huge problem because a lot of them would have needed to pay more than what they earned from their games The part about Unity stealing all of my money was a joke to reference that video (and that past event)
