MAKING My Rat Infested $5,000 CORVETTE Handle Like A ZO6

I bought a 2000 Chevy Corvette convertible that sat in a barn, got ate up by rats, then sat outside for years at a shop. It runs and drives (barely) and was only $5,000. The C5 is one of my all time favorite cars to work on and today we're going to swap the F45 Real Time Damping suspension out for the ZO6 shocks. This is the complete how-to and at the end you won't have any suspension errors on the dash. No reason for simulators or anything, just remove it all and delete the option.

It looked like 7/8ths socket was a good key. If you use the cheap harbor freight colored sockets you can hit them with a sledgehammer and the stuck lugnut comes out with a couple hits.

#1 Don't use impact tools with extractors of any kind.... #2 You have to hammer that type of extractor to get it to bite. #3 put your 7/8 socket in a vise and use a punch to knock the lugnut out..... Lol

Just use a punch through the square drive of the socket to punch the nut out. I do it all the time. You can put the edge of the socket on a flat surface to be able to bang on it. Or both side in a vise. Easy peasy.

Once u beat a socket on the lock easiest way to get it out is to use a hammer and beat on the side of the socket it will usally give enough to let it slide out One edit I usally use a non impact sockets while taking off locks thinner wall is easier to beat on as well as off

Did you try grinding the heads off the wheel studs from the back side and driving the whole stud out? Sometimes you have to think outside the box for odd solutions to stupid problems.

Have a 2003 C5 coupe since 08 kept it in good shape it now has 74k miles, tired of hitting bottom every time it hit bumps, would like raise it a couple of inches or the highest possible height with out damaging dynamics if it’s even possible. What you suggest how to do it? Also contemplating of selling it since I’m out of the country most of the year, your input is much appreciated

I use a impact socket hammered on to remove weird lock nuts, THEN I put the socket in a vice and use a air chizel to punch out the old nuts. Another trick is to put a wheel stud or bolt in a vice, thread on the socket/nut combo and run the impact on the opposite direction to get the nut loose

Should look up the engine on car part and just start calling junk yards with c5’s seeing if they will sell you a harness. Worked for me on a 650i I was working on that I needed a patch of wiring from.

I considered buying those shocks last summer and saw them as low as 279.00, most around 299.00. I cant find them under 369.00 now. Huge increase in such a short time. I dont think a Z06 rear spring fits a base C5. Will you still look to stiffen the rear spring or leave the stock spring?

Hammer the socket on.....hammer and punch the lock out! It couldn’t be easier. OR just drill out the stud and replace it. Takes about 1/2 for each wheel. Literally removed hundreds of these ridiculous wheel locks. They don’t work they just slow down thieves slightly.

_Wow, fifteen days! It took Discount Tire here in my home state five minutes to remove the wheel locks(without the key of course)when I picked up my C4 several years ago. (And they didn't damage the spindle)! Great content JR for sure._

You used too large of the MAC extractor and you shouldn't have used it with the impact. Those types of extractors are available from a few different manufacturers, I have a set from irwin that defeats GM wheel locks. They've been around forever.

Did I miss a few steps here, why didnt you go to the general motors dealership and said hey, I've got a 2000 corvette I'm fixing up, the things got wheel locks on it, here's my title, my proof of ownership, can you give me the tool to get the damn thing off or look at a parts list and find out what it was or even went online and checked for such a device made specifically for these, like hell get in contact with Rob Pitt's, he's got a youtube channel and had one of these with these special chrome rims, hell he probably STILL has the damn thing wheel locks somewhere given how much of a corvette nutt he is.

Yes! Always delete the active suspension when having to replace. Not worth it for most of our driving styles. (Unless of course its something modern and actually good like the C8 like you said).

You need a stick welder with some 7018e sticks. You could weld through anything with those. They’re meant for dirty tractors and farm equipment

I face a similar issue on a Peugeot bolt, on local dealer, schedule for 90 days before to start on it, finally, went to a local mechanich, by 1/4 price, removes it in 20 minutes without problem.

I’ve always just bought a couple,of cheap sockets to get lock nuts off. I mean it worked on two of them, why not just go to the shop and grab a couple? Better than stuffing round with welders and extractors.

This isnt a Z06 suspension by just changing the shocks. It would require the said transverse leafs and sway bars also. The shocks are not springs they just dampen.

Lug nut key is only 30 bucks and you only get them from GM dealership. I know cause I lost mine before. Or you might be able to find on at a junk yard.

On getting those lugnuts out of that socket, use your press, stack that facing down on top of a short section of pipe, to let the nut fall through, and use the press to drive a piece of hardened steel rod down through the 1/2" drive opening to force the lugnut down and out. I used this with a bench vice and took those exact lugnuts off a Dakota. They Suuuuuck.

JR , you could of plasmaed those locks off, had to have that done back in the 90's on my son's Beretta. He had aluminum factory wheels and the guy was so precise , he didn't damage the wheels at all
