I worked many years in the wedding industry, I have made so many petticoats in my life, I would use 20 yards of stiff petticoat netting, 60 inches wide, I would cut the 60 inch wide fabric into 4 equal width of 15 inches, I would pleat each of the 20 yard lengths in one half inch pleats, around 3 inches apart, this amount of pleated material would make two layers of finished petticoat. I would make a simple drawstring slip, the yoke was 10 inches wide and the first row of finished ruffles was attached , then the second row stitched, then the third , two three tier layers would come out of the 20 yards. This petticoat was super full , perfect for a Wedding gown or Ballgown, I hope this will help give you an idea, l saw a petticoat made this way from a Mexican Bridal Shop in 1985,

It's looking so beautiful (and fluffy)! I didn't realize how much fabric would go into this, and the knowledge required to work with the organza. I'm excited to see what comes next. :D

This is beautiful and exactly what I'm about to build. But, I have a couple questions. 1. How long were the circle skirts? You said there was a 6" difference between them. Did you make them 6, 12, and 18"? 2. You mention two tiers in the under layer and three in each of the top. Do you mean there's 8 layers at the hem? 3. You mention 9 yards a few times over. Did you put the same amount in all of the circle skirts? With the different tiers having different circumferences, this would change the gather density. 4. The ruffles seem to be starting at different heights from the ground. Did you allot for the extra length needed for the long gathered layer as the twill to ruffle layer grew with volume?

Hi. I'm a sewer and I've been watching this video for a while. I want to make the Cinderella costume from the live action. But I don't know how to make a ball gown petticoat like how it was in the movie. I was wonder if you could give more details on this petticoat because it's exactly what I need.
@millie67834 жыл бұрын
hi! so i have looked at loads of reference pictures from on set and I can tell you. Just a heads up that if you are going to make a crinoline to dance in, it needs to be more rounded than elliptical otherwise it will bash into the front of your legs. So, the first petticoat is made of godets which are basically triangles with a curve, circle skirts and ruffles. the second layer is chiffon circle skirts and the third is white organza circle skirts, both of which have frills at the bottom. I think that's the right order but there are pictures online of each part i think

I never knew how much fabric goes into one of these! a peticoat is a project I wanted to do for some time! I like the tips you have. I would have never thought of doing a roll hem in an overlocker or use an overlocker for the ruffles! fantastic tips! how long did it take you to construct this? would this work without the hoop skirt?
@AshHeaven6 жыл бұрын
realityabyss I know that an overlocker often makes it easier to finish edges, but since I do not have one or know how to use one, I never really gave much thought to the possible implications. *-*

Hello Chelsea! Or any other sewing peoples in the comments. I have a question concerning the serger. My great-aunt just gifted me her's, but I really have no idea what to use it for/how to use it. In this video, you use it for hemming. Is that it's use? Thanks!

This is remarkable! I do have a question though, is it three separate "skirts" with different tiers, or is it one "skirt with the organza layers sewn in the three different spots? I couldn't tell :]
@joemama85437 жыл бұрын
KiwiShampoo I think it's separated
@homestuckgarbage33247 жыл бұрын
Vane Draws I’ve also been thinking of doing something like this, but I have one question. Would seeing the three skirts together onto one waist band work? Or would it be easier to leave them seperate?
@bun04y6 жыл бұрын
that is a lot of weight for one waist. In my experience as a costume designer putting that much weight onto one waistband can cause it to cut into the wearer. Also having the petticoats separate makes it more versatile for other uses.

Interesting thank you so much for these tips I will have to give polyester organza a try. I often find tulle is too light to have much form often needing a lot which isn't very cost effective, and petticoat netting is a bit stiff for my liking I will have to find this material.
