BLACK GUNPOWDER MAKING: Making of gun powder is commonly practiced by the Konyak Naga Tribe. It was more than just an art form because gun was a necessity weapon used for hunting wild animals and for self defence against enemies. The materials and substances used for making gunpowder are all natural. First, dried wood of rhus chinensis is burnt completely and its charcoal is collected. The charcoal is mixed with saltpetre (Potassium nitrate) and elemental sulphur. These materials burn rapidly and lead to explosion on ignition. Gun powder is used as a propellant in firearms and as blasting agent for explosives. Even before the arrival of the Britishers the use of gun and gunpowder were widely prevalent among the Konyaks. At one point of time, the Britishers were surprised to see the indigenous people using muzzle loading guns because it was very uncommon for them to see the advancement of making such guns and gunpowder in remote areas.
