Making of Smart Doll - vinyl body assembly

Today we take a lookie at the Smart Doll vinyl body assembly process.
Once the vinyl parts arrive from our factory in Katsushika Tokyo, we need to cut off the flash (which we saw in a previous video) and then sort the parts into storage boxes - two sets per box.
In the video you will see the vinyl parts being placed in a heat box - this is a DIY box made from a filing box (you can get them on Amazon) with a heater placed on top - a hole needs to be cut in the filing box or you will end up like that fiery man in the Netflix movie Project Power.
The heat box makes the vinyl parts malleable and enables us to insert the frame. Without heating, the pieces may stretch or crack.
You will also notice a lot of sanding of the parts with a soft sponge and melamine sponge - this is to get rid of as much shine as possible. Even though the molds are sandblasted for a matte finish, sand does not reach all parts of the mold so some of the pieces turn out shiny which should be removed.
If you handle your Smart Dolls a lot, you may notice that the thighs start to become shiny - this is usually because they were wearing shorts and the thighs accumulated sweat from your hands. A melamine sponge will help remove that sheen. If you managed to get hold of a simplified vinyl kit then you will get a sponge in the pack which you can use to buff the surface yourself.
The assembly process does not always go as smooth as the video. Sometimes we need to replace parts of a frame that were too loose or tight, had one too many blemishes on the ball joints etc.
