She was obviously inspired by Joan Crawford's movie, "Humoresque" from the 1940's. The similarity of the scenes, no doubt it was taken from Ms Crawford.

I've always wondered if perhaps Madonna or her director got some of the ideas for this video from the book The Awakening. It's a classic written back around 1900 about a woman who is unhappy with her marriage. In the end the woman walks into the ocean and drowns herself.

hopefully red the director took it from Joan Crawford's film, Humoresque. It's shot by shot taken from Humoresque. Google, "Power of Goodbye Humoresque." I remember when I first saw it and noticing the similarities.
