There was one live action movie that came out in 1991 that had a homeless protagonist played by Robin Williams - The Fisher King. Satoshi Kon probably hadn't seen it. I still love Tokyo Godfathers.

i love this movie so much. I first watched it in Cinemax when they used to play independent, asian movies. That's when I first saw it when I was little. It's a shame they removed it from Netflix in LATAM 😭
