I can always recognize a cap and ball video by the sound of the gunshots. Maybe it's the retaining walls at your range, but the sound is a distinct whizzing. Keep up the good work!
@LarryTalbot_13135 жыл бұрын
They don't sound "sharp" like that in real life. C&B is usually more of a "boom" than a "pop" (but as in everything else in life, there's always an exception!) The whizzing I'm guessing is because of the walls acting as some sort of echo chamber. I've never heard that any where I've ever shot. I've heart a couple of ricochets that sounded like a cross between a "ting" and a "pew." Unfortunately I tried to come back and reproduce that sound and get it on audio and never could!!!
@getmeoutofsanfrancisco99174 жыл бұрын
Long open corridor-like constructions made of brick or concrete with a back wall tend to make that reverberating echoing/delay with transient noises.
@justforever964 жыл бұрын
You watch too many movies. That sound is nothing like what a BP firearm sounds like. That's some kind of weird reverberating echo from the stone walls. You are thinking of the silly sound effects in old Western moves where they add in random bullet "kappwanng!!" noises and crap like that. A BP gun just goes "clickkaBLAM", softer and longer than a modern gun's "CRACK" sound, but there is not "whizzing" except in the movies.

I doubt it. I mean, maybe he could, but the skills for rolling a joint and for wrapping a piece of paper around a wooden mandrel don't overlap very much. Anyone with reasonable dexterity should be able to wrap a piece of paper around a wooden dowel and get a perfect tube. It's not hard. The skill with cigarettes is that you need to wrap the paper into a tube with a mass of soft and irregular plant material inside, and hold it all together and keep the proper tension on it while you lick the gumming, and then roll it together without rolling it too tight. If he was rolling his cartridges freehand without a tube, it would be closer. But still not the same. He'd have to find some way to pour the powder onto the paper and then wrap the paper around it into a tube. that would be the closet I can think of.

Great tutorial video as usual. Hair rolling papers are probably the most inexpensive, method. I know they make great paper cartridges for Sharps breech loaders. Cigarette papers are stronger, but do not burn completely, and leave charred and unburnt residue in the chambers, which is a dangerous condition for reloading. Flash paper and flash glue are 100% efficient and leave zero unburned residue in the chamber. Though authentic, this method is expensive. I have to have product mailed to the USA from France. Round balls may also be used as the projectile. They are usually more accurate for targets at 25 meters. Processed lamb's appendex from the slaughter house were also used and marketed as "seamless" by Colt who shared a patent for this method. The original wooden boxes with bored chambers for each paper cartridge indicate how fragile these combustible cartridges were. It is a miracle that some have survived to this day.

It's interesting to compare and contrast the use of cartridge boxes for muskets from the period, which were constructed the same way, even though those paper cartridges always seem to be depicted as being of much sturdier construction than these pistol versions. I actually found this video because someone in another one suggested using flash paper as sold to magicians for making paper cartridges, and I wondered if that might be a bad idea because of the increased chainfire risk. Interesting to hear this coming from someone with a French accent. It makes me glad to think that the interest in American Civil War and Western history and the old firearms of that era is not limited to the US alone. It's not surprising, seeing as how some of our best Western films were actually made in Italy. I guess it's not really any more surprising than the fascination in the US with medieval European warfare and dress and weapons. Just a little more contemporary.

@justforever964 жыл бұрын
The S&W is a metal cartridge gun, it is in a totally different class from what is being discussed here. It may have shot black powder loads when new, but it never was available in a cap and ball format, unlike the Remington and Colt - part of why they are not break open and the S&W is. No need for a top break except to load metal cartridges in. These are paper cartridges, used only for loading muzzle-loading BP guns, because it's faster than pouring the power and ramming the ball into each cylinder every time you load it. A cab and ball pistol can be purchased in the US without a background check, and is not defined as a "Firearm" by the BATFE. A S&W Top Break fires metallic cartidges and is thus classified as a Firearm. And of course the only S&Ws being produced at the time when this Remington was in widespread use was the .22 caliber S&W No1 and No2 pocket revolvers, which hardly competed for sales.

For my Italian-made Armi San Marco '58 New Army, I make cartridges from: -Cigarette rolling papers -Elmer's white glue (polyvinyl acetate) -.454 lead round balls -FFFg black powder. Since the chambers on the 58 are straight-walled, you can use a piece of wooden dowel for the mandrel. Using the extra-wide cigarette papers, and some finesse, I can get two paper hulls from each rolling paper. 1. A cigarette paper is rolled around the mandrel (dowel), and the cylinder secured using the glue strip on the paper. The resulting paper cylinder is cut off to a pre-determined length. [NOTE: Determining the exact length of the paper cylinder for your specific projectile/powder combination will require a bit of trial-&-error testing. For this process, you can use cornmeal to simulate the volume of black powder. 2. The base of the paper hull is folded in against the end of the mandrel, and sealed with a small dot of glue. 3. Once the glue at the base of the empty paper hull dries, it is carefully slid off of the mandrel, placed in a loading block, and filled with 30 grains of FFFg black powder. 4. A small bead of glue is run around the open mouth of the hull, and a round-ball is placed gently on the mouth of the hull. 5. After the glue dries, I CAREFULLY dip the ball end of the cartridge in a mixture of melted beeswax and vegetable shortening (Crisco). This allows the cartridges to be loaded without extra grease over the chambers. 6. After loading the paper cartridges, I run a pick through each nipple hole to ensure that the back end of the cartridge is pierced, then cap the nipples.
@sergeantbigmac7 жыл бұрын
Good tips. I have an 1858 as well and have found that making them tapered means when loading them into a chamber the narrow end ruptures when squeezed down by the ramrod, therefore eliminating the need for a pick. Just fyi.

Although come to think of it, I bet one reason cap and ball is popular with people in Europe is that in many European nations it is difficult or impossible to own any kind of gun EXCEPT a black powder weapon. And if you're going to be limited to BP only, you might as well get into the most colorful, interesting and diverse area, which is the American Civil War and the Frontier. And of course it is MUCH easier to find replicas of those weapons than most other contemporary BP guns. Kind of a chicken and egg thing, that is. Are the replicas available because of the interest, or is the interest because the replicas are available? I'd guess both, kind of a self-reinforcing feedback system.

Cigarette paper is also very useful, especially thinner, more delicate kinds of cigarette paper, it can burn up in a flash and leave very little ash, I used cigarette paper for fuses when I used to make my own handcannons.

@silvermurex80099 жыл бұрын
wax paper is too thick for the primer sparks to burn thru it i believe ..plus the wax from the paper will ruin your gun's chamber
