Sounds like the makings for a good Myths V Reality, that being store bought paper cartridges kept many a percussion firearm working and shooting long into the so called metallic cartridge era of the mid to late 1870s and the majority of armed folk of the time seldom had an 1873 Colt.

Nice kit, but maybe not for old folks. My kit arrived today and it is exactly the way Dustin describes it in this video. So, being excited to give it a try I sat down in front of my computer and watched this video over and over again and attempted to follow along using the contents of my kit. I have now destroyed about 2 dozen papers and have yet to create a single usable envelope. I do not blame either Dustin or the kit, I can see for myself that he is able to put these things together. I blame a combination of old age and arthritis. My fingers are just not able to perform the delicate operation of wrapping the paper around the former. Think maybe that I might have better luck with coffee filter paper I tried it too. I was correct that it was easier to work with, but unfortunately the filter paper that I was able to get a hold of is too thick and I cannot insert the rolled envelope into the base unit while it is wrapped around the former. This is a great kit, but maybe not for me. My next trick will be to get one of my grand kids over here and see if they can do it. If they can then I will have a free labor source of paper cartridges.
@brianpartlow55303 жыл бұрын
It does look easy to screw up. Hopefully you can have (artwork time) with your grandkids and have them get the envelopes put together. I hope it works out for you. I just ordered a kit, I'm all pumped up. It looks like it will save a lot of time reloading at the range.

Richard, lots of issues come with age. I'm a retired accountant and have had several technical hobbies, so my main problem is bone weakness and am beginning to take medication for it. About 10 months ago I hurt my back at the water store, so I don't get my water that way anymore. I don't know how old you are, but I turned 77 a couple of days ago and other than the back bone problem and need for oxygen, I'm in good shape. Chin up, Buddy.
@monkeyship744013 жыл бұрын
There's a certain amount of dexterity involved. I can get the papers on the former but it takes some extra finger movements that the grand kids won't have any trouble with. Getting the paper to stay still on the former while I'm wrapping the paper around is my problem. Arthritis is a bitch, plain and simple.

I ordered mine a month or so back and got it within two weeks. I was intrigued that the forms and dies appear to be three-D printed items. I had a bit of trouble getting the envelope off the former because of the grooves left behind by the printing process. I have overcome this short coming and now I can make my paper cartridges with little effort. Thanks for the tools to make accurate looking paper cartridges for my cap & ball revolvers.
@ratchbrg38823 жыл бұрын
I was thinking these were 3D printed. I found some similar ones and Printed off my own. I had the same issue. However, before making anything I have taken a very fine file and took off the ridges of my mandrill and made it smooth. I need to get a rounded fine file to get the die smoothed out. I wish I would have done 100% infill on the Mandrill though. I did a hefty 40% but looking at this. I could have made a hole to allow for easy measuring. But, I have a couple powder measures that will work fine. I'm going to get some cig papers tomorrow and make a paper cartridge. My ASM 1860 Army may need the the modification to allow me to fit the cartridge.

I got my formers this week and i couldn't be happier. If you are into blackpowder pistols you should also think about buying. There just isn't that many tools available to make paper cartridges this easy. Obviously you don't need these and can load without it but they can come in handy. So since paper cartridges are tedious to make it's going to take some time so don't give up after just a few, you will get better. I made about 60 cartridges and that took me several hours. But i broke it up by doing all the papers first then loading the powder last. The video instructions are all you need. I suggest in addition you will need an ammo case like MTM or Plano cause paper cartridges are going to be very fragle so you need to protect them from breaking up. The .44 cal will fit a 45acp/40 cal/10mm case. The Walker would need a little bigger case. I took the guns out today and shot all the cartridges i made and had no issues. All fired and there was no delay at all. I did get a little paper residue but not many and this wasn't an issue. Great job Dustin getting this done.

Just a comment from one of your English subscribers. After purchasing and successfully using one of your cartridge kits for my Uberti Colt Walker, I ordered some replacement paper kits, these arrived safely yesterday, thank you. When using the gun at my gun club, fellow shooters are very impressed with the paper cartridges, and carefully watch me load the pistol and out of six shots, I'll perhaps only fire two, as my pals want a go. A little tip: I use Lee Precision REAL cast bullets and I find it is easier to load the gun with the cylinder out of the gun, then reassemble, ram the bullets down, fit the percussion caps and the gun is ready for some fun.

Watched the video, bought the kit, made the envelopes. This was a really zen activity, and quite enjoyable. I trashed a few papers until I figured out the right amount of stickum but it wasn't rocket surgery. The .44 kit -according to GOTW is sized for 30 grains. I had a little trouble retaining round balls so I used less powder so the envelope captured the ball (does that make sense? I wanted the envelope to cover the largest diameter of the ball). The other issue I had was getting enough stickum on the round ball. Initially I tried to apply the adhesive in a line around the circumference but when I tried to glue the ball to the loaded envelope the glue was never in the right place. I ended up just gluing the sh*t out of the ball figuring it would dry out and that worked just fine. Thanks! My Pietta 1860 Army will finally do some honest work!

So, got it... works great with conicals... found holding a round ball with pair of tweezers makes gluing those little buggers much easier...

I just ordered a 36 caliber kit! It looks cool! I can spend more time shooting at the range. No measuring powder.

I Don't have any powder or conical bullets/round balls, But I am still making the cartridges, this makes it easy and fun to do, I thought owning a black powder revolver would be a hassle but with this kit I saved a lot of money instead of buying things I did not need.

I got one of these kits and love it! To help with making the circles I got a .75 inch punch from Amazon and it works really well.

I received my .36 kit in about 4 days, Just got my .375 round balls today, I am working on a box of 50 shells I made ,I have to say, for me, it is easier than I expected, and the finished cartridges look great. Now I can start enjoying my Uberti, Colt police. I would like to find a belt, paper cartridge box. Thanks.

You make that look easy! Just made my first two with your kit, and I'm not sure if I'm cut out for it! I have never tried, but I get the feeling that I couldn't roll a joint to save my life! Lol!

This is so awesome!! I have wanted a black powder revolver forever. Came to the conclusion that I only wanted to shoot conicals with paper cartridges. Why? Because I am weird. I thought I was going to have to do it by hand for each. This is awesome! Even more so because you make one for .31 caliber as well! Why? Because I am weird and am dead set on a Colt pocket model as a first revolver and can't decide between 36 or 31 caliber.

Just got my kit rolled a few and it’s working. But I might need to use more glue they seem to come loose. Some comments on the rolling of it. This one of those time when my experience with hand rolled cigarettes comes in handy. Used bugle 40 some years ago!

Today I finally sat down and rolled some .36 round ball. This kit is great. I highly recommend it and be sure to also get a tin of lube.
@williampollock12744 жыл бұрын
That looks like a neat little kit. I just ordered one right now I'll try it and see how it works. Looks like it would be convenient to just load up a bunch of cartridges the night before you go out shooting. Less mess at the range. No powder measurer or flask on the table.

this works great. Ive done 40 envelopes and have filled and set round balls in 18 of them so far. just ordered a punch so I can cut more rounds as between the ones ive done and the ones I screwed up, ive already used half the kit. I make the paper parts while watching tv, but filling them requires attention cuz black powder gets everywhere.

So there are a lot of comments/questions regarding round ball, lube, wads and heavier loads etc. I've been experimenting and I thought my experience so far might help someone. For the record, I shoot a standard length .36cal M1851 pattern Pietta and I only shoot round ball. Felt wads don't work with these paper cartridges. They're slightly overbore sized and cylindrical in shape, so they don't physically fit in the tubes. They're also not necessary for general plinking. I use unlubricated wads with a very small amount of lube between the wad and ball when I load in the field for hunting big jackrabbits because they happen to take up the right amount of chamber space over my hunting charge, (25 grains 777 fffg,) to leave the ball absolutely flush with the mouth of the chamber which slightly improves accuracy, or more correctly; consistent accuracy. They're useful on a multi day hunt to soften the powder fouling, but no more than two days or they will contaminate and degrade the charge. If possible, fire out your load at the end of each day and swab and reload for the next day, but it should last a couple of days without a problem if that's not possible. Do not use prelubed wads! For these paper cartridges, don't use any wad. It just doesn't work. If you shoot competition, using fine cornmeal as a filler accomplishes the same thing over a smaller charge appropriate to your guns best accuracy. You could cut the tubes long to accommodate this and I might just try that soon, but I don't shoot competition. You honestly don't normally need a lot of or even any lube with round ball at all, but unless you're hunting, if you do want lube, it's probably easiest and best just to top your chambers with a little tallow/bee's wax or if you're in a colder climate, bore butter works just as well. In the heat of the AZ summer, bore butter's useless and messy. Conicals are more in need of lube because more of the projectile is in contact with the barrel and your fouling is lead fouling more than powder fouling, but the nice thing is, it's a lot easier to deal with and I'm sure the lube Dustin includes with the kit should be outstanding. The 17 grain charge measure included with Dustin's kit is pretty close to dead on. If you're careful when you level off your powder, I have measured charges consistently between 15 and 18 grains checked by a small glass graduated cylinder. That's actually somewhat closer than my brass spout and about the same as my brass powder measure. On the assumption that he's consistent in manufacturing, you can trust the built in charge measure of the kit. On that, there are a lot of people who seem to want a heavier or lighter charge. I would make the following suggestion: goex is the least energetic black powder on the market in the U.S. and ffg is significantly less powerful in the same pistol as fffg. If you want a lighter charge for whatever reason, choose goex ffg and use the 17grain measure. Goex fffg is still relatively inexpensive and available and will work fine for plinking or making blank charges for reenactments, but it's kind of a weak powder for anything else. I also find it a little inconsistent in power. A much higher quality and energy powder I've tried has been Swiss fffg and it is very consistent and works well in paper cartridges. If you can find it, ffffg Swiss is probably the closest you can get to the historically correct Hazard fine powder which Colt used in their original cartridges in the late 1800s. It makes for a significantly more energetic and consistent burn, but under roundball, unless I started competing, I don't know that I could justify the expense or hassle of trying to track it down when there are a few other alternatives and if I did compete, I would weigh my charges, not use paper cartridges and invest in a Pedersoli. It did smell better though. Next, the substitutes/ Pyrodex fffg is going to work well where real black powder is difficult to get and it's more energetic then any of the goex powders I've tried, but I didn't like the harder fouling and I found rust on a screw for the loading lever a week after I used it even though I had cleaned the gun thoroughly after I shot it. That has never happened before or since but I gave the almost full pound to someone with a mini cannon. I won't use it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work. Not enough data to be conclusive. Lastly, my go-to powder is 777 fffg. At 17 grains it is at least as powerful and energetic as ffffg Swiss, easier to find and cleans up without drama. It works extremely well in paper cartridges and about the only disadvantage I found was it doesn't have that classic black powder smell. It smells mostly like a modern rifle powder, just a lot more of it. For those who want a heavy or light charge, you might just find you don't need more than the 17 grain charge these paper cartridge kits normally produce, you might just need to select your powder accordingly. I hope this helps anyone who had asked. I don't work for Dustin, I'm a happy customer like you. My cartridge load for plinking - 17 grains 777 fffg under .375 round ball in a paper cartridge made per Dustin's instructions, no lube, with a Remington #10 cap. My big hare hunting load - 25 grains 777 fffg loose under an unlubricated ⅜" thick felt wad, a 📍 pushpin head size drop of tallow/bee's wax/bore butter mixed to match temperature for a peanut butter consistency, .375 pure lead roundball with a Remington #10 cap.

Just got my kit today,it's raining so I'll sit and make up a few for this weekend,will update as to how they worked for me. Got the kit PDQ and looks great. Thanks 👍👍👍. Make one for .50 caliber UPDATE!!!! Man i love this thing it takes a few screw-ups,but i got paper to burn so its fine.I utilize the natural glue on the paper so that eliminates excess glue. it all seems so familiar to my fingers who would've figured huh?
