Nice job, I see most people just have cheap labor countries do it for them. I liked to do it myself, gives me one more skill and practical experience in making something. One great points in making it yourself is if has a fault, you find it fast. Where as you send it out, you don't see it till 2 weeks later!

@dukat03: In the etching process, the photoresist gets destroyed by the UV light, and the exposed surface can be etched. However, the green solder mask gets hardened by UV light, the parts that were not exposed can therefore be dissolved. That's why they are opposite.

There are a lot of comments about the part where I check alignment of the layout regarding UV light. I am not looking directly into it. I put a white sheet of paper on top that converts the UV light into blue visible light. Also, the magnifying lens is only used because the camera I used did not have enough zoom. Nevertheless, these lamps are available to buy for decorative purposes, they do not produce UVB or UVC. I would not recommend staring into them for prolonged periods, though. Just use common sense and/or sunglasses.

hey if you want a cheaper source of uv, a small 75wat (i believe) mercury vapor lamp has more than enough uv to work for several boards at the same time, aslo they last quite a while. last time I checked small UV bulbs in the fluorescent tube style they were 12$ or more each. so with the 5 or 6 you have there thats a lot of $. buyt one Mercury lamp ~$20 maby less, I know for certain they come in 125W for about that price. less space less fragile long lasting cheaper. try it

Is all that pricey equipment necessary? Could an iron fill in for the laminator? I remember hearing sunlight has UV light, too. Think I could borrow a little of that rather than the UV lamp?

I think as I did many times PCBs, that using this method it is not possible to mark as showed almost ready board the solder points and perforation for non smd elements (7th minute and 22 second)

Oh yes, it is possible! Just use some kind of marking on the PCB (crosshair, +, X) anything you can use to align the board and the transparency. I'm using this technique since I quit using the pencil to draw PCBs.

Is it possible, to get a single PCB (2 Layers) for under 20€ or 25$ with about 7*4 inches? I don't need solder resist on it, also. No silk screening needed. Only a Double sided PCB. Is that somehow possible for cheap prices? Most manufactures start at 100€ because of the set-up costs.

I liked the music; good choices ;) The text parts of the video (top right) came through all garbled for me (flash player under linux, several years after video was put up to youtube) so guessing here; but what occurred during the soft brush application in the solder resist layer? ie: only the right pads came through withotu resist.. how is that? how did the actual traces not come through without solder resist? were you careful to only brush on the pad areas or something? (that can't make sense.) How accurate is home etching? I've only done it for very wide traces and low pin count.. never a surface mount part. ie: Can QFP64 or QFP100 be home etched, or far too fine and risky for that? With SMT theres not so much drilling needed, so it could be okay.. but I just doubt its possible to pull off without error? (I have a little drill press, and doing 200 or more drill points for the .1" through hole is really really annoying.. time to make a CNC drill/mill :)

Hi, the solder resist is exposed using a different set of masks than the traces. The solder resist uses a photopositive process: the parts that are hit by UV light get hardened. The mask covers only the pads so the resist can be dissolved there using sodium carbonate because it was not hardened by UV light. Be sure to give the hardening process some time to complete (c. 30 minutes) after exposing. However, professional PCB prototyping prices have dropped a lot since I made this video. I can even source prototypes from here in Germany that cost only twice as much as the materials required for a manual process, not including the time. And these are double sided, which is a real pain (yet possible) to do yourself. The Chinese are even cheaper (they manufacture PCBs down at about the same price as raw copper clad from my local electronics store!), but shipping time sucks, also supporting the local economy is a good idea I think.

I've used elecrow a little; the regualr special of .. 10pcbs, 10x10cm max, for $13USD seems pretty insanely inexpensive; mind you, if you're in a rush and all excited, adding $20 for DHS delivery is nice.. otherwise you'll be waiting 5 weeks. Still, worst case.. $35 for 10 is $3.50/pcb and 10cm square copper clad in my area is a cople of bucks each, so thats hard to compete with; if you wait the full 3-6 weeks delivery, their prices are cheaper than the copper clad! I definately agree it is nice to keep $$ in the local economy, but we have our limits. As I'm relatively new to the electronics industry (I'm a veteran software developer, only been doing electroncis about a year now) I've been stocking up on gear from around the world; osciliscope for 40% the price of local; edge connectors and resistors/caps/etc, just 10% of the local price (and sometimes of dubious quality), and so on.. for gtting started, you just have to pick up a lot of stuff from Thailand, Honk Kong, etc, and then you can perhaps start to be choosey :/ At least general hardware (dremel/rotary tool, glue guns, multimeters, power supplies etc, ) are usually available locally for relatively good prices, everywhere.

after you expose to uv light the unexposed spots are removed through chemical process in the developing solution. which in turn exposes the soldering points. the circuit lines may not all be skinny, because of the electrical needs of the trace, it's part of his particular board

nice work, however, these film masks are expensive. I wish there is an easy and cheap solution out there. I have tried using a cheap UV solder mask paint which i bought from ebay for like $3, but it didn't workout. spreading such thick paint evenly on the pcb is not an easy task.

The documentation from Dow Corning says post-develop cure with UV light, then thermal. If you read the official documentation for this Dynamask there are many recommended steps that most videos on KZbin are skipping. (like moisture bake-out before applying film). All of them contribute to stronger adhesion.

After your brd is finished can it be put into a solution of liquid tin? Is liquid tin necessary with solder mask? Kevin
@StefanNoack
@StefanNoack 8 жыл бұрын
Liquid tin works very well. I'd put it on before applying solder mask, though. It helps if you plan on storing the board for some time before soldering. The liquid tin solution itself does not stay usable for very long once it has been mixed, so it only makes sense if you are making more than a few boards at once.
