Making picture frames out of old pallet wood. This video is about making picture frames out of old wood pallets. I hate to throw old wood away so this is my first attempt at making a picture frame.
Frame size: 16 x20 mat board to fit a 12 x 18 artwork
Frame cut size: 22 /38 x 18 3/8
Summary:
1. Take pallets apart, pull all the nails out, and sort by sizes (this is not shown in the video).
2. Using a table saw rip clean up the rough edges.
3. On the table saw rip 1 1/2 wide stripes and sort the pieces for best character and no splits, bad edges, or bad pieces
4. Miter a 45 degree using whatever tools you have on hand. Popular choice is a miter saw. I have a radial arm saw so the video shows that method. You can still use a stop block and crank out the pieces
5. Router the channel to hold the glass, picture mat board 1/4 deep and 1/4 width. You may need to adjust and go wider
6. Glue up. Using a strap clamp
7. Sanding smooth
8. Clean up and prep for finish (DO NOT shake the can (like I did) stir it). When you shake it adds bubbles and makes a rough finish.
9. Apply finish in even coats waiting 24 hrs between coats
10. Measure and fit the glass. Glass bought at Home Depot. I had to re-router the channel since it was too small.
11. Clean the glass using a lint free cloth
12. Clean the glass again. This glass is really hard to clean
13. Install the glass, and clean inside one last time and then seal with silicone high quality and clean again
14. Fit and attach the artwork to the mat board
15. Place the mat board behind the glass and check for any lose debris, hairs, smudges, lint, dust, and clean can use air car duster
16. Set the mat board with artwork in frame
17. Measure and cut backing board
18. Nail in using a pin driver. Can use a hammer but that method takes forever
19. Measure and cut backing paper
20. Glue backing paper
21. Attach the D rings and wire
22. Optional: Attach any documentation about the artwork
23. Clean front of glass again
