That's a great question, Mary! I have never considered changing the color of the needles, but I suppose it could be done. I would clean them as described in the part 1 video. Then use some kind of dye or food coloring. You'll have to experiment to see how much is needed to get the desired color. Let me know how it goes!

Wow, those needles sound beautiful. I have never worked with any pine needle other than brown, but the cleaning process has not changed the color with those. Just the same brown color. If I were you, I'd try it with a small bunch of needles... maybe a handful. Go through the whole process; let them dry thoroughly and see what happens. I hope they stay the same color because that would make for a beautiful basket! --Jennifer

That is such a nice and good to follow tutorial! Thank you :) I have made my own first pine needle basket a week ago - I also kept the needles damp while using them - but as it dried I realized that the basket got less sturdy due to the needles shrinking as they dried... So I saw another video that said to let them dry out completely again, before using them & this doesn't happen. They had much longer and thinner needles though, I suppose they would not break that quickly. What would you say should I do, to make the finished product more sturdy? I wanna make a bigger one for my boyfriend's birthday, since he loved the first one so much. Thanks in advance - I hope you're still around to see this 😅

Yep, the baskets always get loose once the needles dry. I now always use needles that are treated with vegetable glycerin. The stitches stay nice and tight. I'm not sure if you saw my other instructional video. I show a basket style that is a little different. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qaOrpmqdoaeKfbc

Can you use the green needles off the tree or only the fallen ones?
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ 4 жыл бұрын
I've never tried using green needles. While they would be much more flexible, they would shrink upon drying and I'm pretty sure that would make the basket loosen up and maybe even come apart. Hope you give the basket making a try! --Jennifer

do you like the polyester or raffia better?

@chenoacurtis8678
@chenoacurtis8678 7 жыл бұрын
Just a hint. U can use all thicknesses of Raffia u just need to rap tighter and closer together. And u don't need to tie each piece of Raffia off. You just lay the end flat across Ur needles and then do the same with the new end of Raffia and wrap as u normally do. You will secure both ends of the Raffia without having to tie off 🙂

Have you used leather to stitch?
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ 11 ай бұрын
I have not used leather. If the leather is really thin, it might work. Just remember that the thicker the thread, the more it will break the pine needles as it runs through the coil. However, don't use something as thin and fragile as regular sewing thread as that is just not strong enough.

They are definitely a different species. Mine are from Ponderosa pine trees. Making baskets from short needles is pretty difficult. I have an Etsy shop where I sell pine needles that are between 5-9 inches long, if you're interested (www.etsy.com/shop/myflagstaffhome).

you say sterilized and what do you mean or use to sterilize the needles? ty
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ 5 жыл бұрын
The pine needles are not surgically sterilized, they are just cleaned really well. I'm including a link to Part 1 of this tutorial, which explains the process, but in a nutshell, the needles are first washed in warm water and dish soap, then rinsed. Then I pour boiling water over them and let them soak in that for about 30 minutes. That helps clean off outdoor impurities and softens them, which is necessary to keep them from breaking when making the basket. Here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hnLGlKqNd9loqtU

It was good until about 09:15-09:20 - camera jiggled around and the most important part was not clear. "I'm not gonna put it all the way through." Can you explain?
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ
@MyflagstaffhomeAZ 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the confusion, Diana. If you look at the coil in that part of the video, the coil has three parts folded over. I needed to start a new piece of raffia, so I just needed to attach it so it didn't come loose. So, when I said, "I'm not gonna put it all the way through," I meant I was not going to go through all three folded over pieces, just from the outside fold to part of the middle fold to secure that short piece in place before starting with another long piece of raffia. Does that make sense? If not, let me know so I can clarify further. Thanks for watching and I hope you give the project a try! --Jennifer
