What is the benefit to coating a basket with wax?

It keeps the needles from drying out and makes the basket strong. The teacher who taught me this method says it keeps the baskets from deteriorating over time. He makes museum quality baskets!

Thanks for watching. Recently I've started wiping off excess wax while it's still hot and I have found that to eliminate the stickiness when the basket cools. It is a consideration, though. Too much wax can be a problem. I like the stiffness the wax adds to the basket and the matte finish.

why would you do this?

That'll just break and flake wax everywhere over time. You want the wax to get into the pine needles. Stop using stupid centres, that's a modernism. Spend the extra half an hour to coil from the centre. Then submerge the entire thing in the hot wax. Just like wax boiled leather, it'll harden up significantly and absorb the wax. It'll still flake and wear - but the wax absorbed into the very dry pine needles will stay in it's cellular structure for a very, very long time unless it undergoes some extreme torsional forces over the years.
