My house built in 1909 doesn’t have the access doors so I am going to need to cut like you did. I am guessing the builder skipped this step back in 1909 and didn’t think anyone would notice. Well; he got away with it for over 100 years! This was the only video I could find on KZbin where the little doors didn’t already exist. So thanks for this!

Mine does not have doors. I ripped the sheet rock off around the window and there are long wood boards that I pulled. Behind them were the weights. What I did was leave a small access hole in the wood and then did not sheet rock over the slot. The window molding covers the slot in the sheet rock so I can access it in the future

Doing the same job but in Australia and It’s a little different. Never seen a double hung here that doesn’t already have a weight door. On our new timber double hungs we now use a pulley in the head and connect the ropes from top sash to bottom sash so they both open together

oh wow.. I don't know that I've seen ropes attached like that. I would like to see it so I can learn.

Those unimproved windows in cold climates cost $40 per window per heating season. Most of it from the window weights. Also yellow jackets love window weight spaces to build nests. They then come into the house via the pulleys.

A Marvin window quoted me at $5000 per window. So I can gladly waste $40 per window per season, as it would take me 125 years to pay off those new windows. New windows are a total scam
