Any plans for spring bronze, tubular, or other weatherstripping?
@ShyvonneStutes10 күн бұрын
This really helped. I was ready to throw out my tub and buy a new one. My glaze was sticky, the oil was separated, and there were hard chunks. I mixed it all together, chunks and all. It feels like a brand new tub of glazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

What is the "Magic Dust"? Do you buy it or make it yourself?

Thought I would mention this guy addressed priming the sash with oil in response to one of the comments below. He didn’t do it in the video, because the video was solely for demonstrating the glazing process, but before the camera started rolling he did press to the students that they should prime the sash. In the event anyone was wondering why it was not covered, it was just not on camera

I certainly like the putty knife technique. After deglazing old windows, removing old hard/cracked putty, etc, I usually pre-prime old sash before setting any glass. I also use painter caulk for the glazing set because it is easier to press out. I also tend to go with the rolled out 'ropes' of glazing putty for loading the glass prior to the putty knife set. Will try your way I am sure. I have also simply pressed in putty with the knife blobs along the mullion rather than my thumb or 'rope'. Your method looks like it might be a lot faster at the putty on glazing phase.

I really appreciated your help and input. Maybe a little to much info. Turned into a Stephen King book. I couldn't watch it all.

Yes, the next step is an oil based primer, which is good for all kinds of bare wood. Water based topcoat after that. (Water based primers - don’t even consider).

The sash factory relies heavily on all the parts being a consistent thickness. Do you keep a planer dialed in to that thickness and use another one to bring it down close?
@WoodWindowMakeoverАй бұрын
No I just remember where the knob to raise and lower the cutter is supposed to go. It’s the same every time, so the handle/knob always ends up in the same position.

I'm a sucker for Starrett anything. The 16 foot Exact Plus is a gem and crazy at $16.98 on sale at Mutual Screw. They were out of stock and sent me a 25 footer at the same price. They have all sizes on sale, up to 35'.

You are a wizard! Thanks for this video. I've gouged my share of muntins, scraping against the grain. Loved seeing the Millers Falls push drill, but I'd never seen a spring nailer. I've got to get that tool, a bargain at 12.99 for TWO. I emailed a question about putting glazing points in rock hard maple and look forward to any suggestions.

Windows are a big problem in even a normal situation. As a homeowner for many years I have had many issues. Can tell you are the right man for this project. I see a lot of windows not painted on top. Think the reason is the painters just do not care. As I age out I am still trying new and different ideas on maintenance. PVC has helped a huge amount but must remember, no rack strength. Picked up a tip from a U Tuber of putting water proof glue on bottom of exterior doors and post tops,window bottoms, etc. I would try it on any bare wood and so far results are very good. Just be sure it is dry before locking it down.Believe replacement windows are a huge chance to be ripped off.🦇

Looks like you have the bearing of the rabbet bit flush with the fence? What is the height and depth of the rabbet cut? Or does it depend on the thickness of the pane of glass chosen? What would be standard cut? Thanks for posting

My story is very similar to yours. Although I grew up in a Christian home going to a Christian school. I was searching for the truth in that religious space and always was looking for a teacher. I went to seminary and didn't find the answers, and like you I found my wife who was also different. We were involved in the ministry, I started a business an internet marketing company in 2008 and ever since then have been searching for answers while running our business. I still haven't found a teacher/mentor and now have 5 boys to raise. I am starting a timberframe cabin business with them and wanted to learn how to make our own windows. Glad I came across your channel, I think the best thing for seekers like us is to try to help each other along the way. I dont think we will ever find the mentor that we were looking for but just like figuring that first window out, you can study the pieces and share what you know with others that are trying to figure it out too.

Do you come up with a price after going through the discovery process or is there just a high flat fee for highly custom work like this?

Glad to see you back on the 'Tube. I have outswing casements on the street-facing windows of our house (ca 1925). Problem is, screens (or lack thereof), and madam is sensitive to mosquito bites. On the garden side of the house, the double hung sashes were replaced (by a previous owner, after a kitchen fire) with aluminum slider crap, and I've been thinking to replace those with in-swing casements (which I would try to build; I've studied shop drawings from olden days). Bad idea? I look forward to seeing what you do (and learning something). Thanks.

If I may ask the same question @tatteredone3 asked 11 months ago, how do we replace the ropes on the windows, if the builders didn't cut the door to the weights and pulleys all the way, so that the door opens, they did however place screws into the partically cut door it's cut on one side, the inside and there's a half arsed cut which doesn't connect on the outer side?
