I love how you created the scenario instead of just saying here are some words you figure out the rest... really helped me understand things and remember the words more easily. A more beneficial way of learning so thanks X)

I thought you are supposed to answer the telephone saying, "yeoboseyo?" instead of, "anyonghasaeyo." Are there exceptions or different appropriate ways to answer a phone call?

Or we don't havea table for two six people? what if they say something like they are cflosed and can't m,ake reservation for that time? What if they sayno you aren't allowed to make a reservation? Can you make different senarios for different asnwers because I am sure not all restauraunts will answer the same thing every single time

I notice that when you say the words ipnida and gamsahapnida that you pronounce the p with an m sound while the hangul character clearly indicates the p sound that appears in the way it was spelled using our alphabet. When you said the syllables separately, you used the p sound yet you used the m when you said the whole word. I have been trying to self teach myself Hangul (only for a week so far) and I have not seen anything to indicate this.

It's assimilation. The [p/b] (ㅂ) sound takes on the nasal quality of the [n], becoming [m]. So one would pronounce the [p/b] sound with the broken syllables since [hap/ 합] has nothing after it. And one would change the [p/b] sound to [m] when saying [gamsahamnida/ 감사합니다] since the phrase has the ㅂ and ㄴ together. Same thing happens with [t/d] (ㄷ)- it takes on an [n] sound when next to a nasal sound (ㅁ&ㄴ). Hope that helps!

Hello. Was just wondering why 안녕하세요 was used and not 여보세요?
@yee75979 жыл бұрын
While 여보세요 is for phones, it is kind of between friends/family/calls to people in general. Businesses and offices are more formal settings therefore they have to use a universal formal greeting, 안녕하세요. In English we just have hello and then we just add "this is ____ how may I help you?" and it sounds polite. However, I am not an expert in Korean so this might not be 100% correct. I just feel it is similar to Chinese as in Chinese our Hello (Wai) sounds informal while Ni hao sounds much more formal.
@cassidy99339 жыл бұрын
Thanks for replying :) Did have a hunch it's about formality.

I was thinking that if there was closed captioning and we heard that fill-in-the-blank sound, it would have been transcribed as three dots (…). You know, “Anytime you hear "…", it indicates a fill-in-the-blank.” For example, “Annyeonghaseyo, … imnida.” (Hello, this is ….) And just so you know, I was sharing my thoughts.
