Ergo Proxy, Texhnolyze, Hellsing, Death Note, Monster, Kurozuka, Shiki, Another -- so many dark and mature anime around and before 2010. I love that era of anime, especially the aesthetics.

@@Laughing_Individual But isn't it quite impressive what the Isekai genre has achieved? It's like the fighting tournament genre which dominated the 90s and 2000s from YuYu Hakusho, Flame of Recca, Dragon Ball, etc. It makes me wonder what would be the next influential genre after the Isekai genre.

I love the twist with Raul in this story because at first the impression I had of him was a suspicious and stuck up person but as the story goes on he seems more human and flawed. And his death really made me feel something and wish we could've seen his reunion with Pino before he died.

I can't remember when I first found Ergo Proxy, maybe around the mid 10s. I only just finished watching Ergo Proxy at the age of 28, and I'm glad I didn't watch the series when it came out. I probably would have never grasped the full psychological depth of the show, and also because many clues and aspects of the show only come to light when you rewatch the episodes a second or sometimes even a 3rd time. What I realized at the end of it is that the number of similarities this anime shares with our world is astonishing. The confusing, totalitarian regulated city of Romdeau really resembles a lot of things with how our everyday life is set up to be. Life is hard for many, while some have it easier yet rarely feel satisfied. For many, life feels mundane, and isolating. Lots of people stuck up in small offices working mundane jobs, leading them to seek comfort and distraction during the weekends to avoid confronting difficult existential questions. I liked the ending of your summary. It's very true that watching this anime can evoke a sense of nihilism about humanity's future. However, I believe that anime's like this are created to highlight humanity’s problems and to illustrate the despair that can arise when we, as a society, choose to neglect our moral values. Whatever life throws at us, it's up to us to move forward, to break the mold and to create and build a future worth fighting for.

That ending made me think "Sock Sensei is Anime Jesus." I watched this series 15 years ago when I was young and didn't think as deeply as I can now. I came away with a lot of confusion as to what Ergo Proxy presented or even offered. I have to wonder why I stick through it (probably because it was before the oversaturated Isekai Genre Era.) But you sir have a way with words, a way of breaking down Anime in a way that either makes it better, or makes it make Sense. Appreciate the video, always love the uploads, and I hope Japan is treating you well mate!

Ergo Proxy is like listening to classical music. I dont understand it in comparison to contemporary music but its so rich and deep you almost feel obligated to figure it out. But you dont have to understand things to enjoy them. Eventually you start to pick up things that did not occur to you prior. Thats a very basic analog but I think it fits. Like learning to love cigars or scotch...somethings which at first seem trivial or derivative are in fact the backbone of many many little worlds.

Ergo Proxy: Life is full of suffering and mystery. We are constantly searching for purpose and so easily fall into despair and torment for others and ourselves. After just rewatching this series and taking in others observations I've come to a conclusion that's been the heart of almost every episode. In every lie there is a shadow of the truth. And if the text on the pendant was readable I feel like we might have some understanding of that. So people think it's Latin written on it but it might actually be French. I think this from the first two words on the pendant "mi amor" my love. This was a gift from ergo to monad. What he might have said on that might bring to light something we've missed all these years. But on the lies having shadows of Truth. I've seen it in lots of episodes like the one where monad makes ergo think he's inside of re-l mind. Or the fact proxy 1 is not the true ergo proxy or is the creature made by splitting ergos Malice from him self. I've found I've been able to make sense of many episodes by understanding that principle of story telling. In a sense it was a lie to hide the truth. Kinda like the game show episode, it was a lie but in that lie it told us many truths about the world of ergo proxy. Idk I'm writing this before watching your video all the way through maybe you mentioned this later. But it's something I just came to a realization too.

I believe reading that Proxys are forced to kill each other because only one can exist for one dome or even that one Proxy is assigned to one specific dome. When Ergo as Vincent entered Charos, it triggered Senex to kill Ergo. Its another reason why Mosk fell, being that Monad died before the events of the Series. I really thought i figured this series out after a few rewatches but now you are making me doubt myself lol. Also Monad is the Proxy of Asura, not Romdo, meaning that his death would not have effected Romdo's Electricity.

I watched it back when it was brand new and loved it - the characters having names of various philosophers was a cherry on top, cause I recognized them during the university studies at the same time. I loved it because of beautiful aesthetics, the ontological mystery and existential themes. Ten years later I played Nier Automata and loved it because of beautiful aesthetics, the ontological mystery and existential themes (and terrific gameplay). Some characters having names of philosophers that I knew from my university degree was a cherry on top. Clearly, I loved both works for similar reasons, but, somehow, I didn't really think about or realized before watching this video that the main message of both works is similar as well! (In my defense, I haven't rewatched EP in forever.) Isn't it wonderful? :)

i loved Lain so I download this, too, years ago. made several false-starts watching it. i always lost the plot, felt it moved slow and I couldn't follow it. after seeing this I feel like i can finally watch it and enjoy it

It's not necessarily a virus imo, but a generally toxic atmosphere that a body not adapted to would die in. It's recovered now, at least enough for the hardiest folks (or those helped by medical remedy) to live through.

At first didn't like this show, mainly because I'm super analytical and was frustrated that I didn't understand the whole story on 1st watch, but i was also a teen and this show is very... reserved/mysterious with it's storytelling, because of course it's mainly a philosophical & psychological thriller 1st. Also, the mystery was obviously intentional, it was all supposed to be vague. so now after rewatching a few times into adulthood, i completely grasp the entire story and really love it as a result. Some might say it's pretentious in how it presents everything, but i think it's a pretty intelligent delivery of both themes and the story. It's job is to make the viewer think, and it accomplished that so well. My fav thing when i was younger was trying to piece the story together and the "master plan" set up by Ergo all by myself, but now i love the messages of the 1 off episodes, esp the one where they're stuck in the middle of nowhere without wind. That's now my fav ep, it communicates character growth so well, with excellent small detailing. My fav character on 1st watch was Vincent of course, because he was designed to be cool and to be compelling story-wise, so ofc the unraveling of the mystery with his character was very enthralling, but now after many rewatches, it's Rael/Monad. She is the ground for the audience. In a world of genetically engineered superhumans, she is the most relatable character, and as I said, she became the perfect vehicle for the author to relay his most vital themes through. To me, almost everything about the show is smart, not genius, just smart. Even the way they advertised the show was good, putting Rael, the attractive main girl on the poster as obvious eye candy to draw viewers in, making her a prominent fixture in the story so less mature viewers stay, but then using her character to convey many of the core messages of the series and using her as the vehicle through which the audience learns the same lessons she does and develops as a character, allowing the point of every ep to be subtly hammered home. It's a story about finding yourself and embracing who you really are, covered up by one of the coolest sci-fi, far-future settings I've ever seen. Even the animation was innovative for its time. Edit: Forgot to say, if you wanna watch this masterpiece nowadays, you can! If I remember correctly the ENTIRE English Dub (which is pretty good, they got Gaara's VA for Vincent) is still right here on YT.
