Hugh, I made medium blue shoe polish today when my bees wax pellets came. I made the bees wax & oil with blue wax crayon. Difficulty finding blue polish. Had only olive oil at home but with only 50 gms used it wasn’t a huge expense. My shoes never looked better with a soft glow. The shoes look new, Thank you so much. Took me 15 min. I've just discovered your channel and am thoroughly enjoying your videos. Shoe polish seems so mundane but as small supermarkets don't carry it and places like Woolworths & now Wilkos have disappeared from the hight street, I struggled to find it locally recently. Knowing I can rustle it up from from ingredients I already have is great. Also, I just love hearing/learning about how much more capable we are than we are led to believe. It's nice to hear such everyday making explored in a matter of fact way that neither gate keeps old know-how or patronises the listener.

Crazy, but in today's society so many folks have never polished shoes. It seems that , once they get scuffed and have minor wear, they just get discarded or end up at car boot sales ... where all my footwear has come from ;

Just collect the fine soot from the flame of an oil lamp, you'll get a ready to use, almost pure carbon black pigment. Loved the shoe polish video. How about 'shoe cream'? I'm told that shoe cream is better for my best-quality leather boots and shoes since polish is supposed to trap moisture (I suppose) -- while it protects the leather is doesn't condition it. Opinions?

The reality of shoe creams is that they contain more oils and less wax. Similar ingredients as I use in the Dubbin & shoe polish videos but different proportions. I could happily show a recipe. I filmed soap making today so that will be coming shortly

You could certainly do that Chad for recolouring scarred leather. Suspended mineral pigment in wax gives a deeper sheen though. Both have a place

Great video, thank you so much! I'm just learning about leather shoe care and one site said to be careful with certain oils (such as olive oil) as it can go rancid. Was this incorrect information, or is this not really a concern as this is regular upkeep (clean and apply every once in a while)? Thanks again!

Hi Brenna. I just use rapeseed oil (canola) because it absorbs more easily. I've kept tins for two or three years in a heated cottage & never seen any sign of rancidity. Hugh

Thanks for youre insight, I have some Neatsfoot oil ,coud this replace the Grapeseed oil?
@EnglishCountryLife
@EnglishCountryLife 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! I definitely wouldn't use Neatsfoot oil in polish for regular use. Neatsfoot softens leather - regular polishing would over soften the leather. I do use Neatsfoot oil either directly or in saddle soap. We gave a video on that here; kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKnIdHiZo9SDfM0

Thank you for your video I don't think I ever came across any video which wanted to tackle this you made it easy,I was excited and went ahead and made a batch half of yours,came out great with exception of the finish product Is much mor solid than your,I kind of have to hassle it to the finger what did I do wrong? Second in double boiler did you kind of slow boiled your mix if yes for how long? Thank you look forward to hearing from you

Hi, If the polish is too hard, remelt and add a little more oil to soften it. In the double boiler just heat gently until everything is fully melted. Then stir well & remove from the heat. Hugh

@@EnglishCountryLife thank you so much for your quick reply ,I dis remelt,add oil and its perfect. In some of your video you talked about soap making,what kind of herbs,roots,....can you use to naturally dye a soap?and do all needs to be oil infused?let say can you add turmeric directly to batter or has to be infused?
@EnglishCountryLife
@EnglishCountryLife 4 жыл бұрын
Its a big question because some colours and herbs can make the soap stain the skin (including Turmeric!). I will do another video on soap making to cover it (there is already one) Hugh

Thanks for the video, I was wondering can I use food color (dark red/blue) to provide color to the mixture? The problem is, due to my current location it's difficult for me to get a hold of oxide colors. My concern is will it get locked with wax or will it come off on rubbing?
@EnglishCountryLife
@EnglishCountryLife 3 жыл бұрын
I've never tried with food colouring, but children's wax crayons work well. Iron oxide is simply powdered rust.

You would probably need a blend of mineral pigments. Red oxide & brown oxide mixed might be close. There are people who sell multiple mica powders suitable for blending.

@EnglishCountryLife
@EnglishCountryLife Жыл бұрын
Hi Humprey! Thank you for those kind words. plain white unscented candles are normally made of paraffin wax. It's not as good as beeswax (which you can buy on Amazon) but will work in a pinch although you may have to adjust the proportions of other ingredients to get the right level of hardness.
