There's a beautiful simplicity to his channel. Although he's upped the production value and puts effort into editing his videos, he still kept them looking like a guy just filming himself during woodworking projects. The one with the mouse maze he put up not long ago doesn't look like much but how the music follows the video so well is truly a work of art.

I like the reuse of oak hardwood flooring. I travelled 40km to pick up 120 sq ft of 3/4" planks with staples which took forever to remove. Now I have a lifetime supply of oak strips great for jig making. My problem is where to put all this stuff. Like a squirrel who only remembers 30% of the nuts he buried, I have a garage full of various materials. Every time I clean up it's like finding buried treasure.

you should do a video testing the strength of a joint with a lot of glue, like you tend to use, vs a joint with a thin layer of glue (that's what I've always heard as a recommendation for a strong joint when using wood glue). you could also test to see the strength difference between a joint that is clamped very tightly, vs a joint with just dumbbell weights on it. this is my favorite KZbin channel by the way. thanks

Matthias has said somewhere that he has never found a framing square that was not square. I was a professional framer for many years and have found framing squares out of square, so don't necessarily trust one. They are very easy to put into square again if one goes out of square from falling or some other reason, I'm sure there is a video somewhere explaining how, but don't tale it for granted that a framing square is square.

I actually checked the replies on this comment because I was curious about the same thing. You stated at the beginning that you were going to build them more like T-squares so that they sat properly, but then you didn't. I was curious why. I thought you might have commented about that in this reply, but alas, I was very disappointed in the rudeness of this reply. I truly enjoy your ingenuity and watching the way you make great things out of practically nothing. Yet, you truly need to think about how you're treating your viewers. Loss of respect here, sadly.

The whole point of building the item was to improve it so it no longer fell off the edge of the table. But he never showed how/why it doesn't, or even if it doesn't. Sorry, but even if a question seems stupid, that's no reason to be rude to a loyal viewer and potential customer.

I've bought a few big squares now and not a single one was square. The most expensive one was a Joseph Marples one (~£70) claiming an accuracy better than 0.01mm/10mm blade length. For a 600mm blade, that's a max of 0.6mm out, but mine was a massive 1mm out over the total length. Absolute shit! I've been trying to file it square over the past couple of days which has been pretty tedious, and that's just the outside edge. I should have just bought another framing square and glued a piece of plywood to it!

The amount of value you have provided me in my own shop has been a gift and I hope to some day pay you back. It is because of you that I started making my own videos. I can only hope to provide even a fraction (1/28th haha) of the value to others as you have for me. As a hack in the wood shop (painter by trade) i watch tons and tons of woodworking videos to try and catch up to what I dont know. I just dont get the ragging on of any stains,dyes, paint and do on. Its messy, slow and impractical, and does nothing to help distribute even coats and the list of cons goes on.. I've taken into account the years people have been doing this and tried it thinking im missing something but, I went back to my brushes. Theres a better way! and it is better!

G’day Math, I really like that ‘reverse’ scoring trick you did there. Does that work on all materials? Since it’s standard cut that is the feed speed slower than the blade speed, do you think it differs much from a ‘forward’ 1mm cut?. Do you get a really good finish every time? Any join mark? Lastly, have you tried it on a laminated sheet like melamine or laminex? I don’t have room for a panel saw in my garage any longer and this ‘truck’ has me quite excited. The hardwood faces were a nice touch too. Cheers, Michael

How do you check your square for... square-ness? Genuinely asking since I have one currently but it came with the house and the person who sold us the house never used tools so the last time it was used was over a decade ago or more. So I might be getting a new one just so I don't have to worry. But of course I need to make sure.

you use trigonometry, measure 3 units on one side, 4 units on the other side, the distance between those 2 points should be 5 units. look up pythagoras theorem. However for most projects being at tiny bit off won't make much difference.

In the store, hold two of them back to back and push the other sides against a flat surfaces like a shelf or so. If it there are no gaps, both are 90°, but one could also be 89° and the other 91°, so try with multiple squares.

Align one leg to the edge of a straight board and draw a line along the other leg with a pencil. Flip the square over so the same leg is aligned with the same edge of the board, but facing the opposite direction. Draw another line on top of the first. If they cover each other, it's square. If they diverge or converge, it's not.

Its easy to check if it is square, just draw 1 line with the homemade angle, then flip it out or invert it, and then draw another line, which should be parallel to the first, then observe and or measure using any rule to determine how accurate the space between the line is. Example: __I I__
@Jasoninee
@Jasoninee 6 жыл бұрын
Ulises548 Just making sure that people know what you are talking about must use a straight reference edge. You cant just lay it flat and then roll it over as then of course both lines will be parallel. I guess it could be done flat and flipped the way that would have the two lines form a v or peak in the middle.

The varnish didn't effect squareness at all. I gave them a light scuff sanding to get the dust nibs out (because you know, varnish), and they remain to be perfectly square. I think the key to making these squares is to use 3/4" plywood for stability. Also, even though I used a crosscut sled to cut the pieces, I ensured they were square by using a shooting board. I also recommend the triangular squares over the "L" shaped ones that Matthias built, I could see them being easier to break.

A string and something sharp to tie it to is all you need to make a 90° angle. It is an interesting question, though. Squares go back into prehistory. I imagine there have been quite a few square designs that were useful for the tools used in their time period that are completely forgotten now.
@thomasnixon4440

Make two identical "squares", as good as you can. Put them back to back on a flat surface, and make adjust them both (keeping the angle the same) until there is no gap between them. You can make a flat surface by lapping three iron plates together. No trig or measurement required!

Ah, the age old question, how do make an accurate tool If all you have is less accurate tools? Bootstrapping a square isn't really that hard it's possible to measure squareness with only linear measurements. This old Tony has a whole video on what square means and how to measure it.

as long as you have a string you can make a compass and also define a plumb line, from there it should be reasonably smooth sailing :)

You can construct a right angle with just a compass and a straight edge :) see e.g. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpendicular#Construction_of_the_perpendicular
