Something I tasted in Finland on a cold winters day: Make hot chocolate, add a shot of your mint spirit (amount of your choosing), put small marshmallows on top. Let them melt and you have a creamy drink which warms you up from the inside

I have made a Christmas snaps for a few years that everyone loves, I have given it as Christmas gifts with great reception. Fresh mint from the garden, packed in large jars. Topped with 40-50 ABV neutral spirit for only about 8-12 hours. Strained and redistilled to collect desirable cuts. I add sugar to the proofed hearts cuts to make a slightly sweet 40 ABV snaps. It rocks and I look forward to bring it out for this holiday season. I keep mine clear.

Most botanicals & herbs are so easy to grow at home, even in containers. I have an awesome chocolate mint plant I've been growing for about 5 years now. Can't kill it. Awesome for mint julips. I also have lemon balm, which has self seeded into other containers, and all around the parking lot of my apartment building. I had hyssop & petite wormwood, but the squirrels got that. So in short, grow your 0wn herbs. Oh, and the rule is, if it doesn't fit in the bottle, your are obligated to drink it!

The fact that you can stay up to one with kiddos to care for is pretty impressive in itself. Usually you can preserve the green of the mint by blanching it-a few seconds in boiling water to denature the browning enzymes, then a bit in ice water. If it turns brown, it'll take MUCH longer.

Have you ever considered doing a rooibos distillation? I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that it could be delicious. It might be interesting to compare/contrast a red rooibos and green rooibos distillation.

I think this might be way better using fresh mint. I'll dry my own peppermint end of season and it makes a tasty tea for about a month or so after drying but once dry the flavor starts going stale. Can't help but wonder if the flavors wouldn't be much better if you macerated fresh mint in the vodka and distilled that.

Not sure if it'll work for alcohol but in cooking the browning is caused by oxidation and enzymes so a quick 30 seconds blanche and ice batch tends to stop any form of browning. Just as a thought

Hey Jesse, I have a question for you, I found your channel a few weeks ago, Now I have bought a 4 inch tower to go on top of my 100 litre brewing pot, which has a 5.5 kw element..... my question is, at the top of the column where the 4 inch section drops to 2 inch, could I put a y or t piece and have 2 condensers running, maybe 1 thought botanicals attach to shot gun condenser, the other straight out white spirit vodka though equal size condenser, have you ever seen this ? Cheers and thanks for the awesome content....

Hey this is cool, I have been experimenting with peppermint lately... I hate it but the others seem to dig it so I've been putting in work. Hey can I please ask where you source your water. We are pretty sure that the New Zealand tap water is what is messing with our yield and quality. Buying it from the supermarket is great but it negates the whole economy thing and it is absolutely cost prohibitive. Any ideas are welcome master, your humble servant...

In cooking dried herbs are stronger in flavor. Maybe you could just dehydrate your mint?
@MeMe-Moi
@MeMe-Moi 7 ай бұрын
Dried herbs often have a different flavor profile than fresh herbs as some of the more volatile scent and flavor compounds can be lost in the drying process, so you may get a slightly differently flavor profile. The general cooking equivalent ratio is 1 part dried herb = 3 parts fresh herb, no idea if that translates exactly to distilling though. Blanching the mint first can help avoid the herbs going brown.

Not saying don't experiment with fresh, but mint does respond well to drying and keeps it's flavour for a long time.

Hey man! Have you ever heard of a whiskey called Coldcock Herbal Whisky? Yes, I'm being serious. That's probably the best dang whiskey I've ever had period and I'm having a hell of a time trying to find some that isn't overpriced. A normal 750ml bottle a few years ago here in the USA was like 25 dollars. Now I can't find it anywhere in Indiana and I can only find it online at some stores and I've seen them selling for 70 to 150 dollars now🤷. So I was wondering if you've had it or could replicate it in a video. So I would know how to make my own. I'm serious that stuff was amazingly good❤❤❤. It could make out to be a very interesting video for you to do who knows🤷.

As far as I'm aware real Absinth is made with worwood. After wormwood was banned they made it with mint and became known as 'creme de menthe' (spelling might be off, can't be arsed to look it up). Even in the old days it became obvious the active chemical of wormwood, Thujon, wasn't exactly friendly on the liver. It did however have modest psychoactive properties, mainly in colour perception (again, from the top of my head). In the early 2000's it was allowed to use wormwood again but in lower quantities as the original distillate. Bought a bottle (or maybe a couple) back then and it was clearly different from solely alcohol albeit subtle. Everything seemed more yellow. Besides that, at 50% one didn't need much to feel the alcohol. Maybe someone from France can fill me in on the details as Absinth is their heritage. A bit mingled with the Dutch as Vincent van Gogh was known to indulge in Absinth when he was both in mental decline yet made his most amazint art.
