I am increasingly loving long exposure seascapes. Which is fortunate, since Long Island, NY has a lot of coastline but little that you could call epic. We do have a lot of glacial erratic boulders, and they make for excellent subjects. I will probably build a whole series around these coastal boulders. I can't wait for my trip to the Maine coast, where I'll give these techniques a real workout. Thanks for the inspirational content.

Thanks for this video, which is very inspiring to me. Where I live in New York, we don’t have sea cliffs on the coast here, but there are some interesting places on the coast for long exposure photography. The closest part of the coast to me is on Long Island sound, so sheltered from the Atlantic. Every time I go, the water is like a mill pond and, sometimes, it scarcely needs a long exposure. The water here never produces foam. If I wanted to see it produce real waves and foam, I would have to be there during a snowstorm, which would be potentially dangerous - northeasterly winds, gusts of 100 mph, snow in your face and salt spray that would kill my camera, and the conditions may very well kill me. I will venture to the Atlantic coast soon to get some wave action not during a snowstorm. New York City has a surprising number of beaches. Next time I am in England, I can also seek out some seascapes to shoot.

An L bracket is not convenient for me. Its good for landscape photography but terrible for everything else. I'm always swapping cameras and tripods around and the RC2 system quick release is perfect for that.
@1spitfirepilot5 жыл бұрын
Lovely. Question: if you had a bright sky and you were doing a long exposure without a grad filter, how would you deal with the dynamic range problem? Very long brackets? But if so, that might be a problem, firstly of practicability ( very long waits) , but also movement in the image. What do you do, in practice?
@Firstmanphotography5 жыл бұрын
You can bracket long exposures if done manually. I cant usually be bothered with that though. Normally I just expose for the highlights and recover the shadows. I'll talk more about it on the podcast this week.

So joining the RAW room is pointless ...............or is it. Thanks for another amazing video.

Beginner here so maybe a daft question but is it possible to do longer exposures without a filter? If not what would you recommend as a starter filter? Thanks
@Firstmanphotography5 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can do long exposure if it's dark enough without filters. Go to f/16 or f/22 at ISO 100 and you can lengthen the exposure time. Have look at Zomei filters, that's the cheaper one I use which is still good quality.

In vertical shot ( portrait ) mode camera was offcentered ( in first pic ) with ball head as you didn't use L bracket. 2. Center column is raised up in all scenarios 3. Definitely there might considerable amount of wind due to high altitude and wide open coastal to shake the tripod but couldn't see any weight attached underneath of the center column to stabilize.
