:) I lined mine with an old heavy duty rubber car mat out of my van. It's probably a bit too chunky, but hey, it was just sitting in the shed, may as well use it. :)

Excellent video. Full of time & dollar saving ideas. The speed of the setting silicone from mild pour to release is incredible. I like the simplicity of the mould: imagination, timber & a saw. Thank you for putting in the hard yards of experimental work and then magnanimously sharing with us. Top job. Cheers from Michael. Australia.

Enjoying your videos, I've a suggestion, don't know if anyone else has offered it. Make your mix with the silicone in dawn then take out and roll in/knead in cornstarch to add that toughness you like but will still be easy to work with. keep wetting hands in the dawn solution as you go. Also oil the tray for easier release, with lard or shortening.
@alanrobertson2510

Thanks for the suggestions. As for me I am done with the corn starch what a mess. The silicone does setup pretty fast when you take it out of the dawn. Thanks for your input.

Alan I doubt you will ever see this post. I live in Panama and made a Blue Bowl mat following your instruction except on the 1st try I didn´t. I used "White" like a dumb ass, not good but funny. At any rate I have made 2 beautiful mats....SOoooo....THANK YOU !! One is for the more than goofy guy I hang out with while gathering beach gold. Hi Alan I am having a really difficult time getting the silicone to nead into any kind of a ball. I have tried cheap silicone @ $8 a tube to $12 a tube GE Pro II all being 100% silicone. I am using Dawn dish detergent mixed half and half. The silicone won't mix at all, it just squeezes through my fingers but doesn't stick to them at all. I tried adding more dawn but it didn't help. I used a fine screened siv to drain off the liquid and still wouldn't work. So i figured I'd try anyway. Well the results have been that it will work in the mold (set up in 10-15mins ) but the bottoms look like cottage cheese but the top is fine. It just seems impossible to roll flat and so I smoothed them with my hand but the result is far from perfect. Any help from you or any of your subs that might have an answer would be very much appreciated.
@alanrobertson2510
@alanrobertson2510 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris if the silicone is setting up in 10 to 15 min you are on the right track Please try the method I use in my latest video I did where you press the silicone into the mold and put the silicone into dish soap in one big ball. It kind of sounds like you have to much soap in the water if it will not stick together I hope this helps you out. We are just leaving and will be back on Friday.

100% silicone can still be many types using alkoxy, acetoxy, ester, enoxy or oxime type silanes in the curing. Apparently they can all be accelerated with moisture but I have had different luck with that. The one that smells like vinegar when curing is acetoxy type. I think fishtank marine silicone is alkoxy. The former releases acid while curing the other alcohol.
@1kreature
@1kreature 5 жыл бұрын
Well. I had to check. The fish tank stuff is (at least here) acetoxy aka vinegar smelling. This is at least safe for fish. The Oxime stuff is probably what is used a lot in the us and Canada as it appears to be legal there. It is definitely illegal in Norway due to it being toxic to marine life. The bathroom stuff can be Alkoxy as it is (as Oxime) neutral during cure so will not stain tiles. I have been testing all sorts I could get here to find which accellerate with soapy water and which works with a bit of cornstarch. Unfortunately for me what we have here is mostly Alkoxy and I cannot get it to react with the soapy water at all, regardless of soap brand. The Acetoxy stuff I got (fish tank) was accellerated a bit with soapy water but a lot faster with a bit of acrylic color and cornstarch.

I am very aware if this problem with GE silicone. You are using type 2 silicone you need two use type 1 silicone or moisture cure silicone. I suggest RTV silicone from silicone depot or DAP 100% silicone

I saw the Lego matting in another video and a couple comments about that, I want to try that... Did you use the regular size, duplo's, or both? Did you cut them at an angle to make riffles too or just different heights? I have potential for fine flour gold in a creek with lots of other minerals. Awesome idea by the way, I'm new to prospecting and $100's of dollars to start is excessive if I don't even know if I like it.. old timers used a lot of scrap from what it looks like, and did good.

Hello Matt I used regular size Legos The fist mat I made I used the slanted pieces for the riffles it is pretty aggressive mat the mat I made for fine gold I used the long flat pieces up to two high and it took about half of the chalk I hope this helps you out.
