Kamon at some point in the near future I would like to hear your thoughts on how land owners like myself (I own 95 acres in Middle Tn) can use our acreage to plant bee friendly flora that can facilitate a good nectar flow for late summer and fall. Would such an effort be justified? By the way I am new to beekeeping, but with my engineering background I can't help but analyze and think of ways to improve the productivity of bees in Middle TN. Thanks in advance.

One of the things I see consistently in queen rearing videos is that they are done by folks with large apiaries and an abundance of colonies and a huge number of bees on which to draw. It would be awesome to see videos aimed at the small scale backyard beekeepers with a handful of hives advising them on how to get started with fewer resources than a larger operation can bring to bear. I doo it diferent, but you oll will be scherrd to doo it. I'm going for honey not for spliting. My hives have 10 freme of brood and i stoled evre capt brood frame from the small hives. Now my evre hive for honey is like a starter. But it's dificult to not make them sworme, or think about it. Then the honey is gone. The qweens first get restricted with old honey and pollen fremes. So she can't lay eags. 5 days after i cage them. Then when the hive becams like a starter from all that brood you can put grafts, or a freme with eags if the flow is strong. The thing is that a caged qween stops lain and the bees start to think they shud make a new one. They doo the best cells they can. So, my honey hives are oll like starters but they doo just 3, 4 qween cells. When you see eags from a new qween you take the caged one and relise in a nuck ,like she is a jung qween. Betvin ol thet you trete with OAV and the hive is rede for a new ciklus with a new qween. Hope you anderstend this. You cood doo it with 1 big hive and 2 nucs

I have to say very interesting, I tried to raise queens and failed before years ago and not tried since, I’ll try again hopefully at least getting somewhere close. I find it very hard not so easy. So your tips are lots of nurse bees , (grafting day old eggs), put grafted eggs (in cups ) day 2 to Colony day 10 take out , day 16 queens emerges and put with colonels that need re queening or selling or mating nucs . Don’t know if that’s why.

Hey Kamon, how many times would you use that his of bees, for queen making? I assume each week you would need to add new young bees. When you use it for a while, it must get pretty full of bees. When you are done with it, do you just add a queen cell and turn it into an actual hive?

Kamon, I always enjoy your videos. I need some assistance please. I was wondering if you could answer this question for me I’m not quite understanding. Is it possible to use the same Cell Builder as my cell starter as my cell finisher as well? And is there anything I need to do to make it work to produce good quality queens? Last year I was successful raising queens but it did seem like a tedious process using the cell builder with bees all enclosed for 2-3 days then transferring the new drawn out cells to a queen right cell finisher with queen excluder. We have several hives that need split like now but I haven’t even got started on my process yet 😬😬😩

I'm absolutely amazed you're at your bees without a full suit, I bought a box of bees on frames 2 weeks ago, and when the transport entrance was opened they poured out and I beat a hasty retreat. NOW, even after smoking when I tried to check frames and fit excluder to add top box I'm covered with bees and stung through suit in places. Lucky I got leather gloves, they got the brunt of the attack. I thought they would have calmed down by now,an hour relocation. Impossible to do anything with them. Any help from experienced greatly appreciated. I'm in Wicklow Ireland and bought from someone in the business for generations.😱 They're experienced,I'm not, but this is crazy, Like something out of "The Killer Bee Man" Do I start again? I raised the queens, but I forgot to put a frame of pollen, and I did not put any pastes or substitutes, and 45 out of 48 succeeded, but I was surprised by the small size of the queens (almost the size of the worker) Is the reason for their smallness is the lack of pollen during breeding or the large number (48) ) Thanks

Goodday sir. From this video,I see that you fabricate the right enviroment for the bees to make there own queens. So grafting is not done here. Is that correct? The video following this one. Can you direct me to it please. Grafting is a more accurate, but I would like to do queen rearing without grafting. I am building a 2×3 frames hive as one. So I can double my queen output and have them under eye the same time. My side walls will be glass fitted so that I can monitor progress easier. I think the part 2 of this series is going this direction. Grafting, although more secure is my second choice. I am rearing queens for myself. So I can manupilate the conditions to encourage swaming therefore queen rearing as the result. You're learned opinion will be appreciated, Cobus🐳

I’ve been thinking about how to use a 2 framer, because packing it with nurse bees would be less of a draw on the resources of other hives, if you have only a few hives. Biggest problem seems to be that you’d need one frame with a lot of pollen AND nectar, because the other is your graft frame. Guess you could take a frame of mostly pollen, cut or scrape out a big central area, put it back in the middle of hive to get drawn, then a few days off to the side to get new comb nectar-filled. I don’t need a lot of queens, so I’m planning to use just the upper bar for queen cells, put starter strips in the lower 2 bars to hopefully get comb built, nectar-filled. Bout time I stop pondering, get to doing!

So why do they march in if they have no queen to follow in?

I have never tried it. The result I doubt will be thew same but it still may be acceptable. The bigger/stronger the starter hive the more quality cells it can handle. You could try it but likely it will only be able to handle a handful of cells. Perhaps try 15 and see how they respond

When do you start the queen rearing process? Is it when you start seeing drones?

How is it that the nurse bees are drawn to this nuc even though there’s not a queen? Is it the brood?

yes, young bees that don't fly are especially attracted to hive smells and pheromones that the brood produces

I'm confused, you got the nurse bees from the other colony, but what was in that 5 frame nuc? Was that just a queenless colony already?
