Gotta say I'm with your Dad on this, if it's " worth the effort " then make it the best you can make it, have you guys used Yorkshire grit or Hampshire sheen finishing products, I think you'd like them. My dad too was a turner, I took it up 7 years after he passed, so it's nice to see you guys work together Take care Rob

Watching this video was absolutely heart warming and educational at the same time. It reminds me of me and my father working and not working together. Cherish these moments you have with him. The content was great. Being a new turner and all it’s something that looks somewhat simple to learn and I’ll learn tool techniques at the same time. Shawn, you are simply at the top of the game with these videos, thanks so much for putting them out there!

I love to hear both sides of the school of thought on the marketability, and the artistic idealism. I struggle with this, I don’t think I have made one item that I could make any money on at this point. Thanks for sharing.

I love seing you and your dad working together. Just goes to show, that people sharing the same passion, can have different views on what is the best approach. Make up your own mind as to what you think is right. :) I agree with your father, and I agree with you - depends on the audience. Some farmers market would not appreciate an art piece, so it would be fine to just thrash out a bunch of cheap trees. A gallery, on the other hand, would be able to sell a quality item at a much higher price point, and they would require a higher attention to detail.

I'm new to wood turning and have not yet tried to sell anything, but although it is late I am going to try to complete the tree I started yesterday. Ironically (or not) my son is working with me too. I really appreciate your videos, and the playful disagreements in the videos with father & son. I actually began to comment for the sole purpose of thanking _dad_ for his teaching style, explaining what he's doing and vocalizing important points that aren't easily identified through sight alone. His instruction on using lighter pressure on the distances further out from the chuck is such an important detail 👏
