I am a professional potter from Saga, Japan.
My specialty is Karatsu style "Mishima" technique.
I made two videos to introduce how to make soup cups.
In part 1, I throw the cups and attach the handles.
I hope you will enjoy watching.

Hello sir- your work is beautiful and your skills, workshop and your videos are so enjoyable to watch. My favorite is your soup cup parts 1 & 2. I have question: I see that you apply white slip both BEFORE and AFTER bisque firing. Why don’t you apply slip to the whole cup at once either before or after bisque firing? Also a separate question: Is your white slip considered a “flashing slip”? This kind of slip has more calcined kaolin in it to help it stick to the bisque-ware better. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work with the world.

Thank you. I apply white slip before and after bisque firing, depending on the piece. The reason I apply white slip after the bisque firing for this cup is that the cup has tiny patterns that are easily removed when I apply the "Zogan technique" before bisque firing. I explain the "Zogan technique" in the video below; please take a look if you're interested. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIKUk4Wsiryaa5o kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJDbfmV4odB4as0 My white slip doesn't actually have a very glossy texture by itself. They look shiny because I applied ash glaze over the white slip.

Ah yes I see now. I see the 3 different approaches you are using to Zogan. So in the case of the soup cup you must have once tried applying the slip (like you did in the video) before bisque and when scraping it off found that it disturbed the imprint somehow and did not leave a clean, crisp result (like in the video). Thus to solve this issue you then took advantage of the Bisque firing result in which it leaves the imprints rigid and now are able to “hold” in the slip when applied. And also the bisque’d clay will absorb the liquid slip easily. Is my interpretation correct?

@@damonmanni Yes, that's right. Each zogan method has its characteristics, and I use them differently depending on the work.
