A couple of notes regarding this demonstration: The combination of potassium nitrate and sugar results in a highly flammable mixture. Notice that I only make a small amount (less than 10 grams). If the material is overheated, it can ignite within the pan. Also, when burning a sample, I used a fume hood with fire extinguishers nearby and proper ppe. Long story short, while the combination is simple, it is a dangerous reaction once ignited, and should only be done by professionals.

I mixed up saltpeter (potassium nitrate) and sugar 1:1 by volume and used to cut a small slit in old tennis ball, just big enough to get the tip of a small funnel in. The I would fill up the ball, insert a 3" length of fuse in the slit, and then light it and roll the ball down the street. When the mix ignited, the ball would take off like it was possessed. I miss the 70s, living out in the country.

A tip for you guys, if you want a much bigger reaction you can use Potassium chlorate (KClO3) instead of potassium nitrate. And mix your potassium chlorate with Glycerol or kerosene(soluble with Potassium chlorate) instead of sugar Stay safe guys, because this is going to create some freking big reaction that can create much bigger explosion.

FWIW, sorbitol reportedly works better for this than regular table sugar. Sorbitol melts, rather than needing water to dissolve (that then has to be cooked off), and it melts at a lower temperature (less risk of ignition while mixing), *and* sorbitol will *dissolve* the potassium nitrate, so the resulting mixture is more uniform and more intimate (allowing it to burn faster and more completely). It'll work better still if you add around 1% by weight of red rust, ground fine (everything for this rocket candy should be ground fine before you start to melt it).
@gustavrsh
@gustavrsh 4 ай бұрын
Iron Oxide does speed up the reaction, which is bad if you're launching an actual rocket. Rocket candy already burns very fast compared to other propellants, meaning it generates more pressure in the chamber. Too much pressure and you have an unscheduled disassembly. Source: I help design and build rockets, our best rocket went to about 3300 m (11k ft)
@SilntObsvr
@SilntObsvr 4 ай бұрын
@@gustavrshYou do need to static test and design your ratio of burn area to nozzle throat area to suit your propellant -- just as you'd do with ammonium perchlorate composite propellants (with or without aluminum powder) or the WWII mixture of nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin. I've seen the exact same propellant in the same size grain range from burn time of about 0.4 seconds, to around 6 seconds. All a matter of what shape the grain has, which controls the amount of burning surface and whether that burning area increases or decreases through the burn. Yes, burn *too* fast and your can rupture your casing or blow out a closure. Overall, though, presuming your casing and closures can take the pressure, you'd usually want higher pressure and regression rate to get higher thrust -- which is often preferred with unguided rockets, because more of the impulse will be applied before the gravity turn sets in (that is, your rocket will go higher vs. further downrange).

For everyone wondering: sucrose is just sugar, and potassium nitrate can be bought at places like Lowe’s and Home Depot, in a product called stump remover. Be advised, the chemical Potassium Nitrate (the one needed to make the sugar rocket) is a flame oxidizer, which accelerates flames. Also, the gases produced from the reaction can be hazardous, so be careful when igniting the sugar rocket near others. Edit: please do not blow up your house, follow what the original video creator said about safety!

He said okay and laughed because hydrogen peroxide isn't an oxidizer and it isn't a very good fuel, it isn't very flammable and it is inert when mixed with most standard oxidizers You also bought it at Walmart, not from a chemist... the reason they said "ok" and laughed is because they know you are stupid. Hydrogen =/= hydrogen peroxide lmfao. Acetone peroxide would work but hydrogen peroxide certainly wouldn't considering its suspended in water which makes it inert and you're not separating the two. Welcome to chemistry. 😂 Stupid people will read your comment, like it and say "yep, that's true!", smart people will read your comment and spot your lies.

Is the gain notable or not worth the effort. I've been working with PK+Su+Rio+S only 1% either or of the latter two with a 10% AL or AlMg......holy smokes i dont have a way to measure but something is occuring that equates to double the thrust. I've been working on a better Duvall nozzles and orface config. The AL and Mg at 10% is notoriously difficult to ignite. So I'm coring at 7/32 with my orface at like 1/4 give or take. When the flash has expansion I believe I'm not flowing efficiently and getting back pressure launching my nozzles. Luckily everything has worked as it should along the way and haven't had a Cato yet. It is a wild deal what that Al will do in the mix. I took summer off because I put in a pond. Gonna be back in the lab in November 😆 I've got a couple sweet set ups underway hoping to get a stable working mix dialed in for spring.

@@johncoaleii1423 I'd have to say yes, but one must consider how course some of my raw ingredients were when o reviews them. My first sack of KNO3 was about as granulated as table sugar! I had to dissolve it in hot water, boil off what's appropriate, then I poured the rest into cold metal pans and watched the massive crystals form everywhere. Once I drain it and remove most of the moisture it goes into the oven at 200 degrees for about 30 minutes. This was the difference between igniting and not igniting, for me.

You don’t want to cook it til the sugar is Caramelized because then the fuel will be impossible to dry and will absorb water, you want to cook on low heat just til they are dissolve and add a little bit of iron oxide as a catalyst, also this formula is one of the least scary pyro compositions and you can easily safely make it in 1 pound batches if done on low heat on a hot plate

I had my small town Pharmacist order me some. I have a black powder rifle (Sharps) that takes paper cartridges. I use construction paper to make the cartridges. The paper is put into a salt peter bath and when dry it will completely burn when shot out of the barrel. That way I don’t set the woods (if hunting) or rifle range grass on fire…

As people are pointing out, do not make "rocket candy" indoors / in your kitchen / near anything flammable. A goodwill pan, single-coil hotplate and safe burn area like an metal table in a fire-safe outdoors area with extinguisher and/or charged waterhose on hand isn't much setup compared to a housefire. PS: next time I go to the trouble I am adding boric acid.

We used to do this with dry powder as kids. We put sulfur as well to kinda chop it up and make it a bit more of an even burn. Never cooked it up wet. After about 1994 we found it very difficult to get potassium nitrate. I'm sure the powers that be had good reason to restrict access to such a good oxidiser. Cough.

If you can’t get potassium nitrate you can use sodium nitrate, calcium nitrate, or for a little more “oomph”, potassium perchlorate. Once mixed with sugar, it might be classified as a rocket motor or even a binary explosive in your area, and there may be restrictions on transporting the mixed compound. Always get familiar with your local laws before you start breaking them.😎
