A lot of western mortar and pestles tend to use the material's natural texture to aid in grinding. They range from very smooth like marble or porcelain to extremely rough like a Mexican molcajete made out of porous volcanic stone. Interesting to see what the East produces with the texture carved in to aid in grinding.

Thank you! It's fascinating how there are various types of mortars in the world. It's interesting how tools have evolved uniquely based on the local ingredients and culture, as seen with the Molcajete and Suribachi.

In Thailand (and perhaps other Eastern countries), they also make mortars from volcanic or other very rough stone. Although the ones I've seen are almost flat, rather than true bowls, and are used to make pastes of the spices (e.g. for curries etc.)

This is beautiful and functional. Would I be able to achieve the same result if I use underglaze instead of slip?

Thank you. I’m not entirely certain if the same results can be achieved with underglaze painting, but it could be intriguing to try.

Beautiful video! Can we engrave the comb pattern on a ready made ceramic bowl?

Thank you! I can apply the comb pattern when the clay is half-dried. I think it's difficult to apply my technique after the clay has already undergone bisque firing.
