Hi Carly! Another unique sewing tool which you may find usefull is a Bodkin needle. It is a needle which has a larger eye and a very dull point or a small ball instead of a point. It was commonly used to thread elastic, ribbon and laces through holes of shoes, eyelets, trouser, corsets, etc. I find it really useful for threading elastic in my projects. Which is a plus since I don't have to wrestle with a safety pin. Also you can find some really pretty antique ones since they used to be a daily tool for many people who struggled with fine motor skills, and disabilities such as arthirtis! Additionally, button hooks are a thing! They act like shoe horns but for buttons, effectivly a stick with a hook at the end which you put through the button hole, hook the button, and then pull the button back through with a crochet motion. A very helpful tool for many people which has sadly been forgotten due to the wide adotion of elastic and zippers instead of buttons. Have fun expanding your sewing arsenal & knowledge! /A historical sewist enthusiast from Sweden!

This was so cool! It was clear the project got so much better once you started having fun with it. One idea I had was if the knee patches get shredded over time, you could cut out the worn areas and add on future patches with your tea towels and perhaps a sashiko technique. I think it would look really cool regardless, but that could help make it sturdier/add strength to otherwise very thin fabric while also creating a story of its wear and encouraging additions rather than one-to-one replacements!

Only recently found your channel and love it here! Watching your vids is making me want to spend my whole weekend working on a new sewing project (cloning an old 80's cowboy-esque shirt I stole from my mum's closet but with a patchwork of quilting cotton rather than the yellow silk of the original). Totally agree about doing projects that make you happy; I'm knitting a pair of socks for the first time and when my aunt guided me through wool shopping she insisted that in order to be properly motivated to get through the hard parts it has to be a pattern and yarn that I'm really excited for, so I feel this is quite applicable to most creative endeavours! The way you play with things and create something just for you gave me the boost to do the same. I saw a cute fast fashion Halloween skirt and thought, mmmm would be better as a circle skirt, not in black and with pockets. Spent a couple of days playing round with some denim from my stash, bleaching it because the colour was too dark, machine embroidering spider webs, and finishing it with an adjustable waist because bodies change - sometimes a lot very quickly if you've got a menstruating one. Love the result and now to give patchworking for clothes a go!

These turned out so great! I was not sure about the tea towel idea at first because I was worried they’d be a bit much (and I loved that red and cream stripe fabric and didn’t want to cover too much of it up) but the result is stunning, and so fun! Much more personal than anything neutral could have been! And that draw string solution is so clever! I’m currently very slowly working on remaking an old handbag/backpack I had that I loved. It was partially real leather and partially faux leather, the latter of which has been falling apart after years of use. I don’t have any experience in leather work, so I’m only switching out all the faux leather parts for recycled denim I’ve collected and keeping all the real leather bits as accent pieces. In the end, it won’t be as neutral as my old all brown backpack was, but jeans blue and brown is a colour combo I find very interesting too, so I can’t wait to finish it soon.

Hello, I was curious what you thought about your DDL-8700. My wife and I are about to start on a sewing adventure, Andi was wondering if the ddl-8700 would work for us. I know we need a machine that can handle thicker canvas for jackets and pants (like insulated carhartts or similar). Do you think the 8700 would work well there, or would we need something beefier like a 1541?
@fromcarlyb3 ай бұрын
LOVE the DDL 8700 with my whole heart. If you can afford to buy an industrial you'll love it too. They're work horses. I've never tried the 1541. It's probably worth talking to an industrial machine sales person to get some advice. I've not had any issues sewing denim & thicker materials on my 8700 but I know you can get a model up for more industrious sewing. The 8700 is a great machine for if you want to do a mixture of everything - bags, jackets and lighter weight stuff too like dresses & shirts. A great all rounder.
