Nice idea. Hello I'm new to ferrocerium rod's ect Would be tungsten also suitable for making a fire striker or cobalt steel or would any type of hardend steel work? 🤔 😊 I'm looking maybe for stainless steel like typ 316(A4) that is Saltwater resistant and won't rust or harder steels that don't break easy and don't rust.

I like the idea of having. nice handle with a hardened steel lathe cutter bit. I would probably drill my hold smaller so the hole is the same size as the diagonal width of the cutter bit and then turn the handle once the epoxy has fully cured. A brass ferrule would be nice as well. Thanks for the video and idea.

I had to drive to the next city to buy them because my HF didn't carry them. The blades are a lot smaller than what I was expecting. These are only 1/4" square and about 4" long. They will work and I'm going to make a striker out of them but I need to find larger ones.
@unclebob49643 жыл бұрын
Check your ferro rod after a few strikes with the HSS striker. It will be VERY rippled....which is not good. HSS is very hard on ferro rods. Suggest testing a piece of ceramic knife blade as a striker. You will be pleasantly surprised by the results.
@NathansFerroceriumrods13 жыл бұрын
I agree, if you don't use it correctly. Lay your striker almost flat against the ferro rod, just like peeling a carrot. No ripples.

Hi Nathan, I sent you a message earlier this week but I don't think you received it. I just came back from a Annual Prepper Mèet sponsored by the OPSN. I showed my deer antler ferro rods to the founder of OPSN. I have the opportunity to be to supply this prepper organization with custom , deer antler steels with the logo. They want a better fire steel than the one's i was using, (Coughlan). I am hoping that you can supply the 6"x 1/2" ferro rods. I would really like to get a couple to make the prototype for the organizers to see. This could be a great opportunity for both of us. There's more than 700 members in the Ontario Prepper Survival Network, OPSN. REPLY TO, CamoSurvivalist@gmail.com. Thanks so much Nathan.

Wholesale Tool has individual bits cheap, though I don't know about shipping. All sizes and lengths from 2.5 to 8 inches. It's their "RDX Ground Square Tool Bits" 1/4" x 1/4" x 2-1/2" High speed M2 $1.50. For that matter, a regular HSS twist drill bit would probably scrape just fine if you held it in your left hand and at the correct angle. The flutes are sharp on a new bit.

way too much effort, just buy a Corona Tool sharpener, or any other of the carbide tool sharpeners they are the best strikers for ferro rods and you don't have to go through all the bull shit of having to make one, just Ebay it and they turn up at your door in a few days time.
@NathansFerroceriumrods15 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed making a striker back then. A I agree with you the corona sharpener works but not as good as the ones I make. The striking surface is to small on the corona sharpener. You need at least one inch long striker.

@@NathansFerroceriumrods1 fair enough, and sorry mate as I was a little harsh in my comment, I was a little pissy yesterday. I am not handy enough to make my own strikers hense my reliance on bought ones. There are problems with the carbide strikers though, they rip through small diameter rods pretty quickly, so I only use them on 1/2" diameter rods. Plus the Corona tool sharpeners are getting pretty expensive now to buy, by the time you factor in postage and import duties they are like $40 each.
