What Canada needs to do is build stronger ties with non aggressive countries like China and Russia. Lots of the world depends on your oil and will pay fair market value.
Producers will not take a 10% hit on their product, they'll just find other buyers...like China. Imposing tariffs is a national security issue, as you're pushing allies and trading partners away, in many cases, to your enemies.
@gavinrussell848713 күн бұрын
Precisely this. They’d even be willing to drop prices for other nations to encourage picking up the slack in trade. This would simply result in a rapid decline for the US economy.
@hillbillybeerdranker667812 күн бұрын
The problem with that idea is, China has high tariffs on everyone, and you won't be selling anything to them. I had an order of sunglasses from China that got rejected by US customs who sent the glasses back to China, and the Chinese supplier refused to take them back, telling me that the tariff on things coming from the US was too high for him to accept them back. He refunded me the money, but I'm done with China, and plan to start buying injection molders and making my own sunglasses in the US.
@Bradgilliswhammyman13 күн бұрын
Let me explain this.....Tariffs are passed onto the consumer. If imported widget A costs 10 dollars, and after Tariffs is now 18 dollars......the domestic version will cost 16 or 17 dollars. Domestic producers will not leave money on the table by greatly undercutting the foreign imports. So you have a 40 or 50 percent bump in price for domestic goods and a 60 percent increase in foreign imports.
@brentchattin608113 күн бұрын

We don't pay the tariffs though, because they are put on Canadian products. Canada will pay them or they won't sell anything here. If I'm a lumber retailer and my Canada lumber supplier's lumber suddenly has a 25% tariff, I'm not gonna be ordering a truckload of his lumber, I'll buy US lumber to put on my shelves, therefore consumers won't even have a chance to buy the higher priced Canadian lumber. The Canadian seller will think about it and decide it's better to make some money than none, so he'll lower his lumber price 25% to cover the tariff, then the lumber buyer will pay Trump the tariff. The buyer will pay the tariff, but it's really the Canadian seller paying the tariff by lowering his prices 25%.

If Harbor Freight sets up shop in Canada it'll also eliminate American companies like Warn from the Canadian market. GM trucks are so bad I almost wouldn't care to see all big 3 auto manufacturers take the door as well. I work with a large Can-US manufacturer who has close to 50% of its plants in Canada and 50% in the US. All the plants make essentially the same product under different brand names. They will have no choice but to increase the prices on the US made goods to match the imported Canadian goods so they don't have price discrepancies in store. It would be something like Twizzlers black licorice being 20% more expensive than red because the black was made in Canada due to manufacturing system setup. That would never fly with the consumer, so you need to increase the price of the red to match the tarrifed black, and tell your customer it's inflation.

@hillbillybeerdranker667812 күн бұрын
But they say the stock market crash caused the great depression
@RandyReneau11 күн бұрын
@ I guess you need to learn history, one of reasons of the Great Depression was that Hoover put tariffs on. That with the stock market people buying stocks thought banks with only a small percentage put down. As the markets dropped things happened like margin calls. And people could not pay the banks back, people panic. Runs on banks destroying banking, people in debt to banks like homes and farms losing their properties because they couldn’t pay the loans. But one big was tariffs creating a snow ball effect. Trump is not an educated man, I read that he has people take his tests in college. He can hardly read with a mind of an eight year old. Hate and regret is all he knows. I have read about eight books on him and he’s a fake. He knows nothing, but he’s a great con man. He been involved with organized crime families, a racist, a psychopath, narcissist, cereal liar, and he and his minions will destroy what little democracy we have.
@brentchattin608113 күн бұрын
He was tapped to have a post in the Trump administration because of the paper he wrote. Just like Bill Barr was appointed attorney general a few years ago because of an op-ed he wrote supporting Trump. So in order for this to work is for several unusual events working together in order for a 20% tariff to work. Including the very unlikely event that other nations will retaliate. But what is likely to happen is other nations will work on establishing a currency separate from the dollar so the US cannot use extortion in the future. After all, there are billions of people on earth and the US accounts for only about 340 million. The European Union has a larger population than the US. So basically the odds of tariffs not damaging the US and world economy is about the same as drawing to an inside straight. Considering Trump's history with casinos, I don't think it is safe to bet our economy on that happening.

What im worried about is tariffs on products which are not available in the US. Those costs will be passed on and there is nothing we can do about it. Interesting comment at 1.24 but unlikely to be true. If you were a big enough buyer of a product to impose a price on your supplier then you would have already done that and the price would be at rock bottom. If then a tariff was to be imposed, and particularly at the large percentages being suggested, it seems to me to be very unlikely the supplier would reduce their price to you further by the amount of the tariff or they would then probably be selling to you at a big loss. I suggest the supplier would say that the tariff is imposed on you as the American importer and not on them and they would not reduce their price to absorb it and you need to pay it or get your supply elsewhere.

If the US levies a general tariff on imports, the rest of the world will do the same against the US. The US will be surrounded by a tariff wall. Furthermore, a tariff would drive up the value of the dollar, making US products even more difficult to export. US exports will collapse. Any company outside the US that makes products that compete with US products will be able to export to the whole rest of the world, which is over 3/4 of the world economy, whereas US manufacturers will be left with the US market, which is less than a quarter of the world economy.

The thing is all of the countries Trump is putting tariffs on already have high tariffs on US products. Trump showed where Canada has 20-30% tariffs on nearly all US things. We've had ignorant past presidents that never fought back when countries tariffed our things. They already have tariffs on our things, so they have very little ammo to fire back with retaliatory tariffs.
@Alex_Plante11 күн бұрын
@@icontrolmyownguns2096 The average Canadian tariff on US imports is 1.4%. Most things have 0 tariff, just a few things like cheese are protected. Most countries protect their farmers because farmers have a disproportionate political influence. That's why the US federal govt subsidizes corn. In the eastern half of Canada most farmers are dairy farmers.

China's suppliers need us market indeed but u.s is not the only market for China.No body will run business without making profits. If Walmart to force the suppliers absorb the tariffs,the Chinese suppliers will reduce the cost from the raw materials suppliers then they will try to reduce the cost then you will get a much more mixed in with cheap materials for your products.

Tariffs are useless. The US imposes tariff on countries X and Y so it trade deficit decreases with them but increases countries A, B, C ... America overall trade deficit keeps increasing. The only way is to decouple not just from China but the whole world or stop trading all together. Then you'll have no deficit. Can you do that ?

All these trade agreements and cooperations help to produce mass low quality products & services. Basically, if you are big and strong, you don’t need any partners, who would take resources from you. You can trade with them without any agreements & cooperations, which limits your ability to grow and adjust in the dynamic environment, which requires a lot of energy & resources from yourself. That’s why the only right choice is You.

Dont have to cut USA off oil, just make discount rate on oil, ILLEGAL, thet must pay world pricing. at present USA buys our oil at a discount, discount rate is $14.50 x 4,000,000 barrels a day or $58,000,000 a day... OIL compaines will just have to say to refineries , sorry cant sell you then, its illegal,They will pay!, no choice or lose 16% of their oil supply . Canada looses, as well short term, but long term... will force Canada to build more pipelines and sell a starved energy world, Short term pain for long term gain

15% of our cars are made in Mexico, 20% are made in Canada. If a 25% tariff is put on these cars, all you have to do is buy a US made car. Chevy trucks are made in Mexico and the US and right now they both sell for the same price. GM just makes more profit on the Mexican truck. The thing is, GM won't pay a 10,000 dollar tariff to get the Mexican truck into the US to sell, they'll just return the manufacturing to the US to avoid the tariff.

cost will be passed on to the consumer the wage difference between American Auto workers and Mexicans too great and moving production to USA would be time consuming and costly ....I worked for BUDD company a long established American company that made a diverse range of products wheels , truck Frames , auto parts etc now in Mexico at the time their worker were getting about $20;00 a day and ours on piece work between $250 and 300 a day do the math .

@@SeanGander Mexican workers assembling Chevy trucks are paid 2 dollars an hour while US auto workers making the same truck are paid 42 an hour. It costs 120 in Mexican labor and 2500 in US labor to assemble the same truck, but they both sell for the same price in the US. When a truck is selling for 80,000 dollars, and a 20,000 dollar tariff is put on it coming into the US to Mexico, GM will return production to the US and close the Mexican plant. 120 minus 20,000 = 19,880, this is what it will cost GM to keep making those trucks in Mexico. The 2500 labor in the US is alot less than 19,880 to have it made in Mexico. Lets say GM continues to make trucks in Mexico and just passes on the 20,000 dollar tariff on an 80,000 dollar truck. Nobody is gonna pay 100,000 for a truck, when they can buy a US made truck cheaper. The consumer won't be paying the tariffs unless someone is stoopid and wants to pay 20,000 more for a truck. There are probably a few Democrats that will do it though.

These tariffs are very good thing for upper end consumers. The most important they must spend on premium & luxurious products and services, which has a margin, which helps to create well paid jobs with proper benefits. Of course, those who would like to see mass employment won’t like this idea, but the number of well paid jobs and high quality products & services are always limited. Slowly the number of well paid jobs would grow up. And social inequality would persist. P.S. America got rich and successful because of social inequality, which pushed people to eager more and work harder, without social inequality and competition the society would stuck in mass employment & unemployment. What is a point to work more and harder when your salary is so low?
