What's most amazing is that Bird broke his back in 1985. That means he played over half of his career with what should have been a career-ending injury. If he has been healthy those 13 seasons he could have not only played longer but put up insane numbers that might never be reached.

Sid you know Pete Marivitch and Dr J was on the same team for a little bit. They both were on the Atanta Hawks for a short while. And Grandma loved Larry lol She had a poster of Larry hanging on her kitchen cabinet where she drank her morning coffee so she could start the day with Larry. I love Kevin and the Chief,😢, but if got Larry and one other Celtic it's DJ,😢, every time. Because he was most insynic with Larry. I enjoy watching the Fever because Clark and Boston remind me of Larry and DJ, but now Larry is the guard lol

Did you notice that Larry signed his contract with his left hand? That is the secret that nobody ever talks about. He taught himself to shoot right handed. Imagine how many thousand shots you have to make to get that good with your off hand. Imagine trying to guard a man that can switch from right to left in a heartbeat. I never realized he was left handed until after he retired and I watched him play from college thru NBA. He made passes and shots left-handed every game but it looks so natural that most people don't even realize it. Phil

He had multiple injuries. A shattered index finger that he got before he became a pro (playing softball) . The surgery on it was never able to straighten it out. It remained bent and he said he never had the feel for the ball after it. Achilles tendon & Bone Spur surgeries, a broken back (for which he had to wear a back brace and later back surgery), two different fractures of the face, an infection in his foot that required a 2 inch incision for which he refused a pain shot (said give him a beer) and played that night, concussions, and an injured hand in 1985. It is also said that he refused to take pain medicines. Larry and Magic became really good friends because they had a lot in common. When Larry found out that Magic had tested positive with HIV, he cried and called him right away to talk with him. One other thing you should know about Larry Bird is that he was from a poor family (they never owned a car), was from a small town and went to a small college. His dad, who had PTSD from being in the Korean war, became an alcoholic and ended up taking his life when Larry was 19. Not an easy life.

Oh the East was a BEAST in the 80’s. 76ers Dr J, Moses, MoCheeks, Barkley. Bucks with Moncrief and Marques Johnson, ATL with Dominique. Pistons with Thomas and bad boys. Chicago with Jordan and a few yrs later Pippen. A few Knicks teams with Bernard King. The West had LA and Houston with a little pinch of Portland. LA dominated the West, Houston won the West two time and I think LA the other 8 in the 80’s. West was two teams for a decade.
