People say that Bird wasn’t that fast, I can SEE that maybe, but when they say he wasn’t athletic, I don’t really get it. I think he was probably MORE athletic than many other players. To do the things that Bird does in these and his other highlights, I see a lot of athleticism and of course his smart play, too

One thing (one of many) I admire about Bird is that, as much trash as he'd talk during the game, as thoroughly as he'd torch a guy, if the guy guarding him didn't give up, kept on putting in maximum effort for the whole game, Bird would respect him and compliment him. He DEMOLISHED Sean Kemp one game, gave him like 50, talking trash the whole time, and at the end of the game complimented Kemp on his effort and invited him to come over to Bird's place in the off season and shoot around with him.

Larry got where he got by work and dedication. He would stay after practice to take a hundred extra shots. A maintenance man was cleaning the seating areas in Boston Garden one afternoon. The only other person in the gym was Bird who was dribbling a basketball around in a very methodical manner on the floor. Of course the guy had to go ask what he was doing. Larry's explanation was that he was listening for dead spots in the floor so he not only knew where to avoid dribbling but where to steer anybody he was guarding. That's how you get to that point.

The great misconception is bird was un athletic. So tired of hearing that. Bird was a top tier athlete. He just didn’t look smooth. He worked actually harder than everyone on the court this his stats. He didn’t last long because he worked harder and gave more. Bird excelled in every sport he played and anything he put his will too. Only players that come close to his toughness and work ethic is Kobi and MJ. And, anyone who believes Bird wouldn’t be able to play in today’s league is an idiot. Period. He would physically and mentally destroy today’s league. The only worry Bird would have is the amount of fouls he would get and the amount of psychological damage he would do. Too many players would quit

Good outtakes on your part, but the reason Larry had a chronically bad lower back (in addition to both achilles being injured) was because of all the hustle Bird brought to each game. It's easy to forget that Bird also made the All-NBA Second Defensive Team three times. He wore is body down to the point where he would get into a full-body cast when he was at home, to help minimize the back pain he had. He used that cast for a couple years, and then the next day after he officially retired, he took that same body cast into the woods behind his home in Indiana and blew it to pieces with a shotgun.

I Know People Like To Say He's Not "Athletic", But Come On. No He Was Not A High Flying Slam Dunker. In Fact He Enjoy Beating "Those Athletic Men". But Not Fast, O'Please. When You Watch Some Full Games, You'll See He Is Everywhere That Ball Is Around The Basket. He Get's Rebounds At Both Ends. For His Career He Averaged 10-Rebounds. And Like One Said, He Can Pass Like A Guard. His High BB IQ & Huge Confidence Is Why He's The Best All Around Player. Also, He Made His Teammates Have Confidence. There's So Many Shots That He Could Have Taken Himself, But He Wanted His Teammates More Involved To Get Them Believing In Themselves Better & It Worked. Yes He Also Had A Lot Of Endurance. Why, Because He Ran 3 TO 4 Miles A Day. Away Game's He Might Only 1 To 2 Miles In. You'll See Him Play A Lot Of Minutes Out There, In Fact He Really Wasn't To Happy If They Took Him Out Rest, ha ha ha, Sometimes You Can Tell He Wasn't. I Hate To Kinda Say This, But He was Just Smarter Then Other Players, High IQ/Wit/Skills/Out Worked, Is Why He's Still The Best All Around SF Basketball Player Till To This Day.

Meaning no disrespect to you specifically, saying that Larry "Works way harder than you" Bird is not athletic shows a lack of recognition regarding reality that borders on contemptible. Was he comic book character agile, no man is. Was he even olympic level strong or precise? No sir, but that doesn't meant he had no athleticism. He was in great shape and no one was working harder, full stop. Some guys evidently think that if the player is hyped for being cerebral or understand the game at a fundamental level better than others that the player must also not be very athletic, it's balderdash in this case.

Family was poor as dirt, his dad was a hard worker but had demons and killed himself, Larry knew that working hard was what it was all about, and compared to all that, this is just a game. So out of that, as much as he wanted to compete and win, he also was grounded and knew it wasn’t really a life or death deal. So he just did what he did.

He thought the black man was the best basketball players. He grew up watching the aba. Larry bird was a force to be reckoned with back to his high school days and college days. There is a great video that covers his college years. He really only got to play three years at college because he was considered a transfer and the rules didn't allow a transfer to play. Lovin the Bird videos. These players are able to talk about this because they experienced it. I think that Bird was more likely to make a last second shot, just because he needed the pressure. I only am aware of one time he didn't miss the last second shot. Both Magic and Bird put in unreal amounts of time practicing. They drove each other. In today's NBA, if Joker and Doncic can do it, Larry could do it. And if you wonder how many points per game he could average, the answer is... he would average whatever was needed every night. Points, rebounds, assists, steals, whatever it was that the team needed. He could play with any combination of any players in the league, on the ball, off the ball, under the rim, midrange, long range... just whatever the team needed, he could do.
The only reason you didn’t hear about him is two reasons he’s white and he didn’t endorse all those tennis shoe contracts. He is just simply the best ever, and Jordan only beat him once.

He was such a great leader and always played as hard as any player i have ever watched. He was remarkable at what he was able to do even after having surgery on both feet and breaking his back.
