My Dad was a Special Effects guy in Hollywierd and we were working on a show called Escape from Witch Mountain and we had to fog in a Mountain. So my Dad built a Smoke Machine that could be hooked up to a huge wind machine. We made it to flow 30 gallons a minute of Smoke juice. It worked magnificently until the wind shifted and blew the smoke over freeway and stopped traffic. When I looked around my Dad, the Director, Producers were no where to be seen. So I got the Ticket from the Police. Your machine is pretty good.

So around Eastern in Germany it's often warm and rainy at the same time....We do easter fires, some big some small. The one of the St. George Scouts was regularly 2 stories high of dead wood. not totally dry...but unpaintet and untreated... When the wind turned a big traffic crossing on the other side of a field was smoked up, traffic was stopped, and the firefighters ended the fun. :-( Imagine having to fight fires at Eastern as a firefighter...most were properly wasted too, off course...

Here is a small tip: I repaired lots of smoke machine. They use a simple trick to prevent it from pissing hot fluid: they put the pump in parallel with the thermal switch. When the temperature is too low, the switch close and no power can go throught the pump. When the switch open the power can pass throught the element and into the pump, putting them effectivelly in series. This is fine as the element is so powerfull, so have a low resistance, compared to the tiny power that the pump use, which mean high resistance. Also, add a thermal fuse as a meltdown protection!! Another model I repaired use electronics to do the job of a dual thermostat. Basically it have a 2 set points. One is a pump lockout, the other is the heater cutout. Basically, if the core is too cold it disable the pump, which prevent it from pissing hot fluid. The second thermostat control the heater. I don't know the exact set points, but let's say that the pump cut out at

the smoke is burning blue, it should be white, which means its overheating. I am a special effects artist, and blue smoke reads incorrectly on camera, Its down to the oil overheating. You need to put a drip wire on the nozzle, tie of a piece of wire on the nozzle, this stops the oil dripping back on itself into the element area. A little drip tray will catch the oil as well. I use the Artem smoke machine its similar in principle except we use a gas flame to heat the element.

Great work Nicolas! You gave me an amazing idea which is very similar to yours ! Here is how I'm thinking it : first I want to find the sweet spot of the car exhaust to have like 260-320°c at normal driving conditions, then unscrew the exhaust , make a lot of turns with the copper pipe , drill a hole with the same diameter as the pipe to send all the smoke through the exhaust. After that I'm going to pour aluminium on the copper (just like you did) and Wallah! Haha, all the other things are easy (pump, one way valve, liquid container).The car I want to do it on is really old and this is for prank reasons. Thanks again I can't wait for your next video!

2:34 Higher wattage will affect how much smoke it can produce! The liquid evaporating will steal energy (cool down) the system, and thus the heater has to pump more heat out in order to keep the system hot. If the heater isn't able to keep up with the amount of evaporation happening then you'll just get smoke liquid out the end of your tube instead of smoke. Edit: 7:14 Nope, it's because your heater couldn't keep up with the cooling of the evaporation. Slow down the motor or get a bigger heater. Also, thermal conductivity to the coil from the heater could also be an issue. Adding more aluminum like you suggest is a work around for not having a high enough power heater because the thermal mass of the aluminum acts as a sort of thermal capacitor. So the heater builds up thermal energy into your thermal capacitor which then gets drained as you cool it down by evaporating fog liquid. Edit: "Yes, I vape" 🤣🤣🤣
@reaganharder1480
@reaganharder1480 3 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure even commercially available fog machines don't have enough heating capacity to keep up with the pumps, and thus rely on thermal mass to extend the time it can spew fog.

Thanks for this vid! I watched the other vid about making fog juice, and after searching for a bit, got some Glycerin and Glycol, but when I went to start test found my Pump had gone bad!. (in my 700W unit, heres me thinking it was a cheap throw-away 400w thing). But, having watched this vid I realized how smegging easy it was to just replace the pump!. (well kinda, the new pump was slightly longer, so there had to be some adjustments made to the machine). So thanks, this saved my $100 fog machine !! (the replacement pump was $20, plus install time). Just waiting on a hose ($7) from Amazon, and Ill be able to build my fog cooler and actually test it out!? Again, thanks for this Vid. !!

@@Mrcaffinebean that's not really the reason, these work great but the problem I see is that you need to keep them extremely hot 24/7 to be ready to vaporize at any time, so this is just like having an 800 to 2000 watts heater running constantly, it gets expensive real fast. There's also a chemical version made for cars, those don't require constant power and deliver a mild eye irritant if the car alarm activates. Personally my car alarm has activated countless times by mistake and none because of a break in so I'm not sure I'd want one of those either.

I HIGHLY recommend some type of thermal compound between the thermal switches and the aluminum tubing.

Fun fact! Here in the United States, we actually do use 240 volts! We just create 2 120v potentials and when you cross them together through the coil, you get 240 volts. They are separated in our breaker boxes and the big circuit breakers for 240v just simply bypass the transformer coil and goes across the two potentials making 240 volts. We mainly have this separation for massive appliances like stoves, washing machines and dryers. The 120v is SAFER (not safe) to handle with our main electronics like home PC's, televisions, radios, phones, etc.
