One of my favourite things about this channel is learning just how many different variants there are of the same console model due to the internal parts slightly changing. Even the original GameBoy Advance had two different models.

20:50 although the connection is the same, the 70k is not equivalent functionality-wise to a expansion bay model Sony removed the HDD drivers from on board ROM. Wich essentially makes the 70k behave the same as a PCMCIA model, aka: *SCPH-1X000* To put it simple: it won't autonomously boot the HDD MBR program, it requires a bootloader on the memory card. Fortunately, FreeMcBoot has a secret feature to do the MBR booting on its own, it just requires pasting 3 .irx drivers into the corresponding system update folder

Like you mentioned this was originally a mod discovered by a user over at psx-scene , it required a lot of wires and cutting into a IDE cable, later a Chinese manufacturer started making them on two flex cables and included a replacement bottom cover for the PS2 and a 12/5v power supply , it could take any 3.5" IDE hard drives, there was some bugs with the original software too but can't remember them as it was years since I last fitted one , we only ever got about a dozen of them before they disappeared off the market. Some things to consider with the SCPH-7000x it's not recommended to install a mod chip(modbo 4 , Matrix infinity etc...) in them in my book , the mechacon on these are notoriousfor crashing and killing the laser coils, only protection that worked about 80% of the time was the sub-zero mod, or the resistor mod, don't use the diodes that come with chips they are useless, I stopped doing that model console because of that.

Beautiful work brotha! I manually wired one of these recently, never again lol. The flex makes it so much more reasonable. The issue with the the IDE to SD card pcbs is that they only support a max of 128gb. I've been meaning to try one of those m2 sata adapters to see if I can get a 1tb working.

@draconic5129
@draconic5129 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if that limit is actually a hard limit or is just a limit that they put on the specs page on Amazon, 128gb is a bit of a weird capacity to cap at since other cases like 2, 4, or 32GB caps are based on memory allocation or file systems but 128gb just seems like they put the largest available SD size at the current time (lots of these adopters are of an older design) and it's not actually a real limit but rather the largest available card at the time it was designed, similar to how my old Samsung phone says it only takes up to 64GB cards because there weren't larger one's available when it was made but in reality the phone can likely take up to 2TB (because of MBR partition limit, though I've only gone up to 256GB since 512 cards were and still are a bit pricey).

Soldering on to the resistors from the bottom side was very difficult, I ended up lifting a pad from the QSB and having to wire directly from a resistor to the IDE pin. My recommendation is to use braided bare wire to make that connection, since flux'd solder will have a very hard time bridging that small gap. That did the job for me, and though my cable management is not nearly as pretty, I was able to follow along. Thanks a lot, Tito!

I did this mod a while ago before the QSB was available, and have been frustrated by the 128GB limit due to the missing LBA48 support on the adapter. I looked around for adapters with support for a while with LBA48 support and had no luck. However, tonight I remembered the iflash CF -> SD card adapters for replacing the mini IDE hard drives in old iPods. Ordered some tonight and am going to try to redo my slim with that. From what I understand those adapters are completely compatible with the IDE spec and should support much larger SD cards. Keeping fingers crossed, should be a fun experiment and I haven't seen anyone attempt to do this mod this way.

Ages ago, I got a V12 PS2 that had burnt laser. While I was unable to find the DVD assembly at the time, I used it with an external HDD connected via a IDE2USB adapter. When I found about this mod, I wanted to buy the custom flex cable to make the mod but I was unable to find it for sale. So, I took a 80wires IDE cable and started soldering. I did a good job, it took me almost two days to finish (yes, I took my time) but it was done. I had some laptop IDE HDDs, from 20G to 160G that I was not gonna use again and formated and installed games with WinHiip. I made HDDs for each genre and swapped when wanted to play a different type of game. The HDD I put in the original DVD tray and the advantages were that it required only 5V and was slim enough to fit. When I connected to the internet, OPL downloaded the covers and info for the games and stored them on each HDD. I still have that console. I promised myself that I will never do this mod again but it seems that (since I have another V12 PS2) I will give it a try with the new flex cable. Only this time I will use a IDE2SATA adapter because is easyest to remove a SATA connector than the old IDE 44 pin. And maybe I will disguise the HDD/SSD in a cartridge form shell ;) Beautiful cable management (mine was a mess compared).

Tbh the most practical method(regardless of the ps2 slim model) is the SMB sharing method as you can buy a Travel router (the common/cheap one I used was the TP-Link Travel Router) and SMB Share your games (without much of a data limit to speak of) that way.

I had a phat ps2 in the day, and today and putting in a hdd or ssd or so much easier. But i guess if you're more nostalgic for a slim, don't have the space or simply like the slim better this is sure as heck a very nice mod indeed ;)

TIto, how thin can one go when doing such mods in terms of wire used? 34AWG for signaling cables (and 28AWG for 5v)?

Yeah and him saying "You can put an internal HARD DRIVE into your slim PS2" over and over is just false advertising. Then the video is a really complex mod for a microSD card reader.

Having quite a bit of soldering experience is mandatory for this, I’ve got the experience but Wowzers. This is small, I’ll need some magnification. Well done sir, you are for sure a gaming enthusiast, nice work . Very nice fit on the micro SD card. The small led is nice, I’d want it. Very nice routing on the wires. Grade A work.

One thing to note about slim PS2s is to be careful with the PS2 DVD ribbon cable because it can scratch the disks in the slim models if messed with. I have a PS2 slim i don't used because the ribbon cable does that.
@ドリフト180X
@ドリフト180X Жыл бұрын
Yeah I had a DVD movie get scratched from that, after that I applied some heat resistant adhesive to the ribbon cable to keep it down and that has worked. No problems with that since. But I keep an eye on it to see if it ever needs to be glued again.

There is no point in using an SSD, IDE read/write speeds range from 5mbps to 100mbps real world transfer speed, that is slower than modern USB. I get it folks liking the idea, but the bandwidth just isn't there to use it, so the price premium over a normal drive isn't worth while. 150mbps is pretty common read/write for hard drives, even the time spent loading the games to the SDD wouldn't be faster as the transfer speed of most SSD's caps out at about 75-100mpbs write once the cache is fully saturated. The read speed, and latency is where an SSD shines, both of which can't be taken advantage of with a 90's era IDE connection (not saying ps2 is 90's IDE dates back to 1989).

There is one feature the Slim model can't have, and that's the FireWire port for LAN play. Very few people actually use that port, but I do for Time Crisis 2 and 3, so I'll be sticking with my Fat consoles. Still this is a cool mod!

I was very excited to see this because I've watched Gusse's videos in the past and was/am amazed by his work, but that price point is just a compete deterrent lol, I can't imagine spending $40 on just an FPCB that is WAY too much, I can understand though that these probably aren't terribly cheap to get manufactured with the shape they are, but I will hold off for the future hopefully the price will drop with other people ordering or he will release the Gerber files at some point so we can just order our own batch manually, regardless still insanely awesome to see that this is an ez install now :)
