PB33, Manganese Blue! An amazing color, beautifully granulating and so vibrant! A true cyan.
This incredible pigment has been discontinued since the late 80’s and although discovered in 1907, it was only around for a mere 80 years as an artists pigment in paint (a large reserve of this pigment has been used after the 80’s to keep making paint). It’s other use was as a colorant in cement, mainly for swimming pools. It was discontinued because of safety regulations. Manganese pigments are a mild toxic substance, but more so in its dry state. In this case it was mostly the toxic waste that was a result of the production of the pigment.
It’s known as the lost cyan in many artists palettes, you can come close with other pigments, but only as mixes and not fully as chromatic as this PB33. So this exact intense beautiful and bright cyan blue, hasn’t been matched yet by any other pigment to date. An extinct but true primary blue.
Luckily, I found enough of this to make it a regular pigment in my line of paints.
The muller is by Thomas Petit and it's made from 24% lead crystal. It is a custom muller made especially for Dirty Blue. Have a look at thomaspetitgla...
