Making The Whole World Your Friend, with Tara Brach [2023-03-01]
A wonderful translation of the Pali word Metta is friendliness. This talk looks at friendliness through an evolutionary lens, and explores ways we can cultivate a more open heart.

Dear Tara, I have been a student for many years now and your loving wise teachings continue to cleanse old habits and to bring in life/joy affirming experiences into my life. I love how you share your own blocks to the heart. You help me to feel “It’s not just me.”

I have experienced social anxiety throughout my life and I have become more conscious of the threatening lens associated with that experience. I often felt like I wasn't my own friend either and I longed for the feeling of friendship. After I watched this video I became more aware of how much I project this onto the world and people around me. Life changing concept. Thank you Tara

Lovely. I just posted a note to self in car as I listened, in my 'calming time' after visiting aged mother: * We're in this world together. * We're connected. * Remember and feel that. * Be friendly.

From Anam Ćara - Real friendship or love is not manufactured or achieved by an act of will or intention. Friendship is always an act of recognition. This metaphor of friendship can be grounded in the clay nature of the human body. When you find the person you love, an act of ancient recognition brings you together. It is as if millions of years before the silence of nature broke, your lover’s clay and your clay lay side by side. Then in the turning of the seasons, your one clay divided and separated. You began to rise as distinct clay forms, each housing a different individuality and destiny. Without even knowing it, your secret memory mourned your loss of each other. While your clay selves wandered for thousands of years through the universe, your longing for each other never faded. This metaphor helps to explain how in the moment of friendship two souls suddenly recognize each other. It could be a meeting on the street, or at a party or a lecture, or just a simple, banal introduction, then suddenly there is the flash of recognition and the embers of kinship glow. There is an awakening between you, a sense of ancient knowing. Love opens the door of ancient recognition. You enter. You come home to each other at last. As Euripides said, “Two friends, one soul.”

The fox study you spoke of at the beginning was very interesting! A detail that you didn't mention or I missed in your talk was that they selected for friendliness by selecting foxes to breed that came to the front of their cage when a caretaker approached as opposed the foxes that cowered in the back corners of their cages. In translation, they selected for friendliness by selecting against fear and in favor of courage noting that courage has heart at it's foundation.

Actually... rethink your cognitive distortions and biases, your narratives... consciousness DOES extend life for many. How? There is the awareness to take care of the vessel (your body) so better sleep, nutrition, no alcohol and so on...DO extend life. Additionally, those who have learned to be present, conscious, moment to moment, have calmed down their sympathetic nervous system and decreased the risk of associated diseases. When a person can be calm, not constantly activated in fight/flight/fawn/freeze, they don't have all the stress hormones dumping and wreaking havoc on the organism. I noticed my prior comment was deleted. If you are threatened by others views, I'd suggest you pursue why. Pursue yourself deeper and what drives you. Secure people can hear other ideas and not become derailed or threatened. They can pause and consider and don't personalize things.
