It has been a while since the last time I made a bamboo arrow. I have damaged a few during practice and borrowed friends to use it. The arrow is not enough. It is time to make a new arrow. This time I used ash wood as the main material, and made a tenon on the arrow part, adding purple heartwood and rosewood to enhance the physical strength of the arrow, and also increased the weight of the arrow for a counterweight. Insert the horn piece into the tail to make the tail of the arrow. The overall system of the arrow is a bit heavier, and the shooting speed feels much slower than the bamboo arrow, but the stability is quite good. The arrow axis is also relatively straight. Next time I want to find wood with sufficient strength but lightweight to make. If you have suggestions for making wood for arrow shafts, you can leave a message below for suggestions. Thank you for watching.

Do you desire greater range, greater velocity, or just durability? In the West arrows have been typically made of strong but variably flexible hardwoods like ash, elm, willow, spruce and oak that are generally about twice as dense as bamboo which is nevertheless up to dozens of times stronger than them. For the same diameter and length, bamboo should be more durable than any hardwood. Physics says a heavier arrow will accelerate less than a lighter arrow for a given "weight" of bow (F=ma; more m means less a for a given F), but it will also be deflected less by wind and lose less speed due to air resistance. Your feel is backed by science. ;>) Determine what properties you want your arrows to have and mix and match materials as needed to get the mas you want and the mass distribution you need. There is no reason you can't have, for instance, bamboo shafts with ironwood (very dense and very hard) heads and maple (dense but resilient) feet.

Thank you for such a very informative video, sir. I am a professional Traditional Archer in building Custom Reflex/Deflex longbows from Hickory, Brazillian Walnut and backed with Bamboo. My arrows are built from Port Orford Cedar and they are all match-graded to the draw weight of the bow. I also weigh each arrow to where they are within 10 grains from arrow number one, to arrow number twelve, on a jewelers scale, as I build them in lots of a dozen (12). It is almost exactly like shooting the same arrow throughout.
@paulhomsy2751
@paulhomsy2751 2 жыл бұрын
You're doing it the proper way. He's very artistic but his groups at such a short distance are very poor. His bow is very slow, doesn't generate any arrow speed and he probably doesn't know how important it is to match spline and weight of a set of arrows.

Beautiful arrows. I would fine tune them before fletching to try and get a perfectly flying arrow (all of them landing perpendicular to the target). It's known as bareshaft tuning, shooting an arrow without feathers until it is the right length and weight. Takes some fine tuning with front of center weight and getting the right arrow spine for your draw, but this is a year late. I'm sure you've totally nailed this now. Beautiful work friend!

Thumbs up for you! Great job in hand making the wooden arrows for the bamboo bow! Have a question for you: Why chosen Ash/Rosewood and Purple heart wood? someone suggest or as per your wood working experience! Also have some suggestion:1.arrow length: usually the length should be within 1" ranger longer of archer's Draw Length 2.tip: I saw you use hammer to punch the arrow head into the shaft. better apply some super glue in gluing up the shaft/head. It will last longer time.3.Tail/horn material: correct me if I am wrong. the horn material is quite expensive so really do not need to use that material, I am sure some views here may be interested in asking customer order for them so to lower down the cost just used the wooden shaft is good enough.4.you will need to measure the weight of each arrow and put the arrow with the similar weight lot in same group so the shooting result(grouping) will be better.5.About 35 years ago. I have a trade customer in USA(A very famous archery maker)ask us to make a project for junior archery equipment that included the wooden arrow, during that time we have try to use Southern Asia hardwood like larmin/rubber wood..etc but all those wooden shaft were not working at all so the project was not making. Back to current days In my Canada archery club, some member did shooting the traditional bow with wooden arrow and they use either maple. Oak or some north America hard wood. I also learned to make the straight wooden arrow, you will need to treat each shaft with fire/heat treatment. so this will be a very longer progress time .Also suggest to apply a thin top coating or stain on top of the wooden shaft as unfinished shaft will be very easy to absorb the moisture and making the shaft tent to twist and very difficult to keep it straight. Hope above input can give you some information that you may need in making wooden arrow!!

Thank you for your reply, I learned a lot of mistakes in making this batch of arrows, keeping the weight and length of each arrow and the choice of wood. I use ash because it is the wood that many arrow manufacturers would choose, so I want to try it, but I think it is too heavy for a bow with a low pound. Purple heart wood and rosewood are just beautiful in color and high in hardness to prevent arrows from bursting.

North American traditional arrows are mostly made from Port Orford Cedar. When it temporarily became scarce, Sitka Spruce and Norway Pine was used. People who like heavy shafts for hunting, may use Rock Maple or Ash.

А мы в России, ещё когда были детьми, с друзьями делали стрелы из сварочных электродов диаметром 4мм. Какие чудесные стрелы у нас получались! Правда сварщики со строек почему то ругались! 😜

As a shaft wood for arrows. In the Neolithic period, shafts made of woolly snowball, Virbunum lantana, were used. Also false cypress, Camaecypsris lawsoniana are good arrow shaft wood. You can also use Red Cedar. Anything better than ash. Thank you for your heart.

Love your workmanship, very impressive. I made arrows for decades, before I injured my arm and can no longer shoot. I assume these are traditional arrows and you are following a long cultural history. My only comment is that without a standard fletching size, the arrows will have a markedly different drop at longer ranges, probably no problem if you are always at 15 yards, is this true? You are willing to use Superglue but not a Nichrome Wire Feather Burner, not understanding this choice? Another thing you didn't do was steam or compression straiten the shafts, another curiosity. I'm left to believe this is all about tradition and less about accuracy? Still give you total respect, just interested in your choices.

"Nichrome Wire Feather Burner" This is really a good thing, I will try to make one, thank you. "Another thing you didn't do was steam or compression straiten the shafts, another curiosity " Is there any relevant information, can I watch the video?

If they are already straight after he turns/shapes the shafts, is there a need to "steam or compression straighten" them?

@@_trismegistus I've never seen a dozen freshly made shafts that are all strait, wood is just not that way. Seems like he is making traditional archery equipment using some modern methods and adhesives, I was just having conversation not trying to be critical; I don't shoot anymore anyways.

@@woodenren Sorry for taking so long, look at this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYHYqYChmJeea9k You can find various compression tools that I'm sure you could make at home, it's basically a metal roller maybe could use nylon, with a half round cut out or you can learn how to steam, that's all I ever did. Good luck. I do miss shooting traditional archery. Straitening Video kzbin.info/www/bejne/gneUap2JnbuVqdk
