Thank you Owen, I guess you're right about my idea of orange peel isn't the same as most other people would see it, LOL I'm always trying to show the best results straight out of a gun, it wasn't bad this time around, if it wasn't as warm as it was that day and clear had a little more time to flow out before it set up, it would've looked even better, that's what I'm going for every time

I am not sure who puts a thumb down for this..maybe it was a Rolls Royce employee from their body shop..who knows. From the first video you put out on this prohject, I was hooked. Partly thinking, can this guy pull this off? As you got through each stage, I was now thinking, you really know what you are doing and doing this all outside took real guts ! By no means am I a car body expert, however this serves as a real inspiration to those wanting to work on their own projects at home. I can't say that I'm surprised at the end result, it came out looking like OEM and which side of the Rolls was damaged? You can't tell. Nice tutorial on the steps in the process. Your next project is going to be even more interesting. I hope it won't be too long before you start posting videos on it. Interesting that while you were showing the finished paintwork on the rolls, it showed up all the spots of dirt on my laptop screen!!!! I thought my screen was pretty clean already? Thank you Bruce, I've already done some filming on the truck and working on a video as we speak, hopefully I'll have it out tomorrow. It's going to be a long project, these frame off restorations are never quick :-) plus I am doing a resto mod so there's gonna be a lot of custom things I would have to fabricate and build to make this truck what I want it to be. I'm pretty sure there's gonna be other projects that I will start and finish alongside of this truck. So hopefully I'll have this thing will be done by spring so I can enjoy in the summer :-)

And to answer your question, my Makita is a variable speed buffer, meaning there is a small selector wheel that I can turn the speed up or down with, I can also Control the speed of the buffer with the different pressure on the trigger, normally run the buffer at around 1200-1500 RPM, but whenever I get to the areas where "you have to be careful" I'll drop the speed to about 500 RPM and also lighten pressure on the buffing pad... That normally works for me, CHEERS from Seattle !!!

Every step of the repair was approved by a friend of mine who is the owner of this Rolls-Royce. He did not want to pay extra to get the glass removed. I wasn't going to do it for free 😎

There are a couple of auto paint stores that are local to me, one of them is overpriced though. So I normally go to the other place that's a bit more reasonable. And they are pretty good about nailing the color down for a good match

If you are in Puget Sound area you should have no problem finding a Wesco auto body store in your area. They are pretty spendy though, I am in Auburn/Federal Way area, the store where I normally go to is down in Auburn Valley it's called "automotive industrial paint supply" their prices are a lot more reasonable

i still cant believe the owner had this done to that poor Rolls...if you can afford this car you shoud be able to afford thousands in repairs... sure the work is top notch, you'd almost never know it was done...but its still a rolling bondo bucket... Still as i said top notch work

Believe it or not but there was already some Bondo on the quarter panel that I was working on, found that out once I start removing some of the paint to get down to the bare metal, so that Rolls was a Bondo bucket even before I started working on it :-)

The new parts would have cost some 26 K, plus labor and paint at least another 6 K, That would bring the total cost to about 32 K. How much did the rapair cost?

You are correct, this would've been a pretty costly repair and if it got taken into a shop someplace. Since this was my best friend's car he got a steep discount on labor, I don't want to embarrass myself by saying how much I actually charged him because the charge was very low...

Looks good. I use the same 3 step system. What rpm speeds do you use on all the steps?

Generally on flat areas I keep the RPMs around 3000-3500. Once I start getting closer to the curves I slow down, lower buffer speed means less friction temperatures thus reducing the chance of a burn through especially around panel edges or body lines

That 3m compound is crazy expensive nowdays. Its way cheaper to do what you did going up to 3000 grit to polish it up as much as possible before buffing. where did he get the rolls? copart? insurance auction?

You aren't kidding about the price of the compound, I'm actually thinking about stepping it up to 5000 after 3000, spend a few extra minutes sanding/save a few bucks in compound cost possibly get even nicer finish. I think he picked it up the Rolls at the copart...

Probably more......my gmc sierra duramax needed the driverside doors replaced/repaired, part of the bedside as well and a new rear axle....insurance quote was $35k.......I was shocked when they went for it, I thought for sure they were gonna salvage it out, it too is black and fully loaded slt model with lots of upgrades $100k truck 10 years ago.....now maybe $55k on a good day....don't even have 75k mi on it yet!!!.........that rolls turned out phenomenal, damn I wish I would have just had them salvage me out...I would have just brought my truck back to you to make it great again, for far less than $35k

He actually did sell it just very recently. Obviously he did the full disclosure of the damage with pictures and a video. Buyer was very pleased with the quality of finish... No complaints... My friend did just recently get another vehicle that I'm currently working on for him. But unlike the Rolls-Royce this other project is going to be much, much easier and quicker, it's mostly just cosmetic damage and paint... I'll have a video of it here pretty soon
