This was our first time attempting to make and eat Filipino Tinolang Manok! Otherwise known as Chicken Tinola this is a delicious soup dish from the Philippines that’s essentially a ginger broth with chicken pieces, and usually topped off with malunggay leaves. Annoyingly we couldn’t find those or the often alternative pepper leaves so instead we settled for spinach. Tinolang Manok really encompasses what we’ve come to learn and love about Filipino cuisine, it’s vibrant, unique and DELICIOUS!!

WOW! Chicken Tinola did not disappoint! Chloe and I even went as far to make it again last night! We also just bought Siling Labuyo seeds from the Philippines so we can harvest it and use the leaves in the future! Much love ❤️😁 P.S Make sure to stick around till the end to find out the giveaway WINNER!

Use less water and add coconut milk to your tinola , cook until sauce thickens n creamy, add siling haba towards the end and you get a new dish called "Ginataang Manok".

Hi, sweet Jonny and Chloe! I think your soup looks fantastic. And what a nourishing and comforting meal to eat if you were feeling a bit poorly. The ginger would definitely add to the healing properties of the chicken soup, as would the papaya. Thank you for yet another wonderful video! 🤗🤗

i always finish watching all the pop-up ads till the end because i like your channel. so much respect to Jonny because he does not show any qualms about the smell of the fish sauce and bagoong and he legitimately eats food with these condiments. i'm speaking based on my own experiences about living with mostly Europeans and they hate the smell of fish sauce nd bagoong. i used to hide them after using them and i usually open the windows of the kitchen after cooking them. That"s why i am very amazed how Jonny eats Filipino foods and condiments in particular. Great vid as always. Well done Jonny n Chloe.

Hi Roman! Thank you so much for your comment. It's funny really, I used to dislike the smell of fish sauce 😂 I thought it smelt like feet! But now I really love it and I love a dippy dippy sauce. It's just so important to try something new, how do you possible know whether you'll like something if you're not willing to try..? And I can't wait to continue trying new Filipino food (Spoiler alert!) Tomorrow we're making Bistek Tagalog 😁- Jonny

That's the way I cut the whole chicken too for tinola the way Chloe did section by section. Sometimes the chicken I used are just the legs and thighs. Chicken tinola after chicken adobo, and dinuguan is a personal favorite and such a dish simple and easy to cook. With lots of steaming white rice, preferably calrose or jasmine rice. With rice, sometimes I mixed brown rice in there with the white. With brown rice I prefer Hinode brand. BTW, half-way through the video I just knew the tinola would be a hit! I can tell Chloe's has some impressive cooking skills is just out there, top-notched! Keep up the good work you both, and thank you! Peace!!! 😀😊😍😎

I was about to comment that you forgot to put a pepper, either whole or ground pepper will do which gives a kick on the soup. But then as I was watching your vlog, Chloe remembers it hahaha Sili leaves or malunggay are the best vegetables which gives more strong flavors otherwise spinach will not be a problem, the papaya itself is good. We also put "siling haba" or long chili, they called it "sword chili" in Spanish. It adds a nice aroma in the tinola, and when served, we get the long chili and add put it in our patis (fish sauce) to spice up when we dipped. ( make sure to crushed it) Other town in the Philippines levels up their tinola because some put coconut milk and put red chilis. Then the rest same recipe Congratulations on your tagalog Jonny, you're the best Chloe is the best cook,

Put sinigang mix or tamarind, lemon or kalamansi, then you have sinigang na manok. :) Siling dahon means chili leaves because dahon is leaf/leaves and sili is chili. Using spinach is not wrong. They almost have the same taste. Malunggay (or horse radish) has a bitter taste, but not so much. Chicken is manok. Most filipino foods can be seasoned using patis or fish sauce as a replacement to salt. Some put tomatoes, others use fresh turmeric instead of the regular ginger but it will have a different flavor. You may use some annatto powder or asuete to have a red soup/broth. Some put msg or chicken bouillon? bouillion cubes. Some use patis/fish sauce with chili, kalamansi, vinegar, finely chopped or grated ginger, onion, garlic or any of these combinations as dipping or side sauce.

Good video! pepper leaves or horseradish leaves we use are usually frozen. we don't normally substitute spinach but for papaya -we often use chayote. the malunggay is the one that make you say this is normally eaten by nursing women but generally, we like to eat it on rainy - cold days or when one is feeling under the weather

You must try Hunts Pork and Beans with slices of Pork. It's really good also. First, saute garlic then onion when it's light brown must add pork then mix. put a little bit of fish sauce then mix again. Add some water wait until the pork is chewable or soft it depends to your preference. Then put Hunts pork and beans also add 2 table spoon of soy sauce green sili Panigang the long one. ( It's up to you if you want to add salt for the taste ) perfect with rice. Wait until it's thick. Enjoy!

Yey, glad you liked it. It is one of my faves. When I pre-cook the chicken I put fish sauce so it gets a bit of a salty coat, which then adds another layer of flavor to the soup when you put the broth or water in. I suggest kinamatisang baboy (pork rib part) It is also a fresh tomato stew. It gets its sourness from tomatoes instead of from tamarind in sinigang.

Whenever I do prolonged fasting, this is my go to dish to break my fast, it's cheaper and easier to make compared to beef based soups and you can be quite liberal with the amount of veggies which I do. Thank you Jonny and Chloe for making this fan-favorite Filipino dish Chicken Tinola. We really appreciate this. Filipino cuisine has been aloof to the world and many if not everyone is into our food yet here you are helping advertise our cuisine to the world. We understand that our food is lagging behind other asian countries in terms of popularity and vlogs like yours help us promoting it to the world. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts. One day, when the time right, we would love to invite you to visit our country and explore more about what the Philippines and its heritage through food can best to offer. God bless your vlog. Love from Pinoys in SG.

Tinola is best with Philippine native chicken. Back when we still have many chickens, when my friends come over, I would catch one, butcher it and cook some tinola. And all of the ingredients are just in the backyard, the papaya, sili and malunggay. Sadly our chickens caught avian flu so we don't have chicken anymore.

Quicker to peel garlic is crush it first with the knife's blade & the skin on. Afterwhich, the meat is more flavorful & easier to cut to bits.

Your chicken tinola looked really yummy! Glad you enjoyed your meal! I suggest next time you make your tinola, basil leaves are a nice touch. Not too much since it can be overpowering but it does give the broth a nice aroma and deeper flavour. Also, you can add the fish sauce while sauteeing the chicken in the aromatics since it will really penetrate the flavour in the meat. ☺️

Wow! So glad you enjoyed tinolang manok! I'd say that would be good if you're feeling under the weather or feeling run down because of the chicken broth and ginger. Hopefully you try and cook menudo next time. One of my favorite Pinoy dish. Thanks Jonny and Chloe!
